Walk through the Garden

I planted Zinnias in between the corn and tomatoes.

Zinnias are annuals, meaning that after flowering and setting seeds
for a season, the original plant will not return in the following years.

These are so easy to plant since you sow zinnia seeds just 1/4 inch deep. Zinnia plants do not like to be moved, so I started them from seed directly in the garden bed. And they grew so fast from seed.

Most zinnia types grow tall and require propping to keep their heavy stems from trailing behind the plant. These aren't tall enough to put stakes in them.

There are three basic types of zinnia flowers: double, semidouble, and single. The number of rows of petals and the visibility of the flower's core determine which of these shapes are which.

The first two photos of zinnia (above) are single;
the ones below are semidouble;
and the last one photo'd is a double!

To promote the formation of new flowers,
I will remove the older blooms from the zinnias.
This is a technique known as "deadheading".

Deadheading flowers involves removing spent or faded flowers from plants to improve their overall appearance and encourage more blooms. Deadheading also prolongs the blooming period of your plants, which helps them live longer.

They are excellent as cutting flowers or as food for butterflies since they have beautiful, solitary, daisy-like flowerheads on a single, tall stem.

I've included a YouTube video on how to deadhead Zinnias.

Being annuals, zinnias will perish
with the first severe frost of the autumn season.
