And if you rent a leaky, poorly insulated apartment (cough), your choices are somewhat limited as to what you can do to keep your home warm. My heat is stuck on the highest setting right now and it's still too cold for comfort in here. So what to do?

Now, if you've lived in a cold climate for long and/or read any DIYs on the subject, you may already know to cover your air conditioner if you have one, and that you can put bubble wrap or specially-made plastic wrap that you attach with a hair dryer on your single-pane windows. But what else can you do?

If you have a leaky, cold, metal door like mine, you want to mitigate that as best as you can. Stuff a rug or a blanket along the bottom to stop drafts if you don't have a purpose-made draft dodger (yes, that's a name for them that made me double take the first time I heard it, lol). If your door is metal, you can hang a light blanket from it with magnet clips like I did - fleece is insulating and light! If you don't have magnet clips or your door is not metal, you can try hanging it from the wall above, though that might make going in and out a bit more awkward. I also taped some bubble wrap along the bottom of the door - you can see it peeking out from the blanket - to add a bit more insulation. I didn't go all the way down because of the tape, but I might go back and add a bit more lower down later.

If you notice, because of the convenient position, I also tucked the fleece blanket into the gap in-between the mouldings for the closet door and the front door. Otherwise there is a literal WIND gushing through that gap in the door, and it is cold af.

Got a sliding glass door that you're not going to open any time soon? I have the sliding glass door to nowhere in my living room - there's just a rail in front of the bottom half of it, no additional balcony space - so it only gets opened when I want a cool breeze in the summer. So I took some of the large size air bubbles and taped them vertically along the gap/crack in-between the sliding door part and the immoveable window part.

I know the door blanket makes a difference, because I've done it in years past but I had just spaced out putting one up the past couple of days (d'oh!), but this is the first time I thought to insulate that sliding door with big air bubbles. Hopefully it makes a difference! I've got my curtains drawn over that window, but the primary "curtain" there is just one of those tapestries that is the thickness of a bed sheet. It's pretty, but not very insulating! This cold has reminded me to get off my arse and finish that insulated curtain I started sewing for that window ages ago and never finished. You might see a Needlework Monday post from me about that sooner than expected, lol.

Speaking of insulated curtains, I have some store-bought ones in the bedroom. When I fell asleep yesterday afternoon, one side of one window's curtain was open. When I woke up at 1something this morning, I closed it, and very quickly the mercury thermometer dropped a ball, which means it got 4 degrees warmer in here. Do not underestimate the power of some good, insulated curtains! :)
