Woke Capital?

Conservatives are losing their minds over corporations promoting "identity politics" and "PC culture", blaming "woke leftists" for the disintegration of society and invoking the race war. But they're missing the point, so I'll try to explain.

Republicans and other conservatives complain loudly about powerful institutions, like corporations, governments, universities and entertainment media, shaping society in a progressive and leftist mold. On the internet there's no escaping the blogs and videos criticizing Hollywood, Disney and large multinationals for capitulating to the "woke mob" by increasing diversity and placing marginalized demographics in the spotlight. "What, there's an Asian actress in Star Wars?!?" That can't be right! There's never been Asians in the Star Wars universe! It must be the woke mob who pressurized Disney into representation of minorities!

The same song is sung when gay people are given a place in the public sphere, or transgenders, or lesbians. Conservatives who fall for this sort of populism completely miss the point. The reason why Disney hires Asian actors is to sell their movies to the extremely large Asian market, China in particular. The reason why Coca Cola and other multinationals carry the rainbow flag each pride-month, is to virtue-signal that they stand with these marginalized minorities. In other words, their "wokeness" serves the very conservative purpose of protecting their place at the top of the capitalist hierarchy. Unfortunately this is also why establishment politicians take a knee to virtue-signal their support of Black Lifes Matter.

This is their cheap way to act as if they give a damn about the marginalized position these minorities hold in society. They don't really care about ending racism or transphobia; they care about their bottom-line, they care about increasing the price of their stocks, about pleasing their investors. Republicans and other conservatives should learn a lesson here; if "woke" is the way of those who really hold power, the corporations and establishment politicians the world over, that means that "woke" is the way of the vast majority of the societies they sit on top of. It's funny that this is the one place they seem to reject their usual mantra of "the markets know best", when this is one of the few instances where the markets really do know best, as they align with the democratic voice of the populous.

I've included two videos with this short post. The one linked above shows how things go wrong when a business tries the same kind of virtue-signalling, but with right-wing and conservative values. It's the story about an "anti-woke" bank, endorsed by conservative darling Candace Owens, and how it failed completely in less than three months; that should say something about how unpopular the anti-woke position is. Linked below is a video diving deeper into the origins of identity politics in the socialist black women liberation movement, and how it's co-opted by the powers that be.
