Return Of The Hulk

Today I'm just here to share with you a personal joy. I've been a Formula 1 fan for decades now; I remember watching with my dad in the 1980s and early 1990s, at the height of the Senna vs. Prost rivalry. The tragic death of Senna is burnt into my memory... After that I quit watching and only resumed at the end of the Michael Schumacher era; how I enjoyed Fernando Alonso finally pushing him of the throne in 2005...

Since 2007 it was Lewis Hamilton who kept me glued to the screen; that year was his debut in Formula 1 and he immediately outshone the aforementioned double world champion Fernando Alonso. It was only a matter of time before Lewis would claim his first World Championship, which he already did in 2008. The next year it was Jenson Button's turn to finish first in the divers' championship, after which the Sebastian Vettel winning streak of 4 consecutive world championships began After that, since 2014, it has been Lewis Hamilton with just one short break in 2016, when his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg won his first and only championship; Rosberg quit the sport that same year.

Of course for me, living in the Netherlands, Max Verstappen is the one to watch; I think he's at least as talented and hard working as Hamilton, Alonso or Schumacher. But this post, the reason why I'm so happy right now, is about none of the aforementioned drivers. No, the smile on my face right now is because of Nico Hülkenberg. I just learned that he will be racing at the British Grand Prix on Silverstone this weekend because he'll replace Sergio Perez who has tested positive for the covid-19 virus. He's up and running and feeling good, but he's not allowed to race due to Formula one's strict quarantine measures. Hülkenberg has always been one of my favorite drivers, but somehow things never worked out for him in the sport; since his debut in 2010 he has never even scored a podium and I believe he holds the record for the driver with most race-starts without ever standing on one of the podium places. So when he quit the sport at the end of last year, he wasn't all that happy with that record: Nico Hulkenberg Opens Up on Formula One Exit, His Undesired Records and Regrets.

As he'll replace Sergio Perez, Hülkenberg will for the first time in his (already ended) career sit in a car that has a realistic chance to finish in the top three. So, I'll be glued to the screen tomorrow afternoon and keep my fingers crossed! After that I have to work a few hours, and then I'll resume business as usual and treat you to the kind of post you've come to expect from me...
