The Long Island Ripper case has been one of the most enigmatic and complicated to solve in recent US history. Since 2010, the remains of at least 11 people have been found on Long Island, New York, all of whom have been identified as prostitutes. The press gave him the nickname "Ripper" because of the brutality of the murders, which involve suffocation, dismemberment and desecration of the bodies.
The first discovery occurred in December 2010, when a police officer doing a routine search for human remains in search of a missing woman made the chance discovery of a series of human remains in a rubbish bag along the Ocean Parkway on Long Island. Soon after, more bodies were found, leading investigators to determine that they had found a serial killer.

In May 2011, it was confirmed that four of the victims belonged to prostitutes who had advertised their services on Craigslist. The ad was posted under the pseudonym "Shannan Gilbert", who was also a prostitute, and had been missing since May 2010. Unfortunately, her body was not found until December of the same year.
In September 2011, additional remains were discovered in a rubbish bag. The remains belonged to victim number nine, who was later identified as Jessica Taylor. Despite efforts to identify all of the victims, some of the victims have not yet been identified.

Since the beginning of the investigation, several suspects have been named. Joseph Brewer was one of the first suspects, who provided a solid alibi and was quickly ruled out after cooperating with authorities. Another suspect was John Bittrolff, who in 2017 was convicted of the rape and murder of two women in the 1990s. While some elements suggest he may be involved in the Ripper series of murders, there is still no consistent evidence linking him.
Recent attention has focused on James Burke, former Suffolk police chief, who is currently in prison for corruption and abuse of power. In 2019, a federal judge ruled that Burke had responsibility for the illegal detention of a suspect in the murders. After his arrest, it was determined that his DNA matched that found on one of the Ripper victims. He denies any involvement in the murders.
