YellowJackets: Pilot & More - Season 1 - Personal Thoughts

Source

Yellowjackets is a series already on its season 2, I had it on my watch list for sometime but totally forgot about it on season one, now that season 2 came out got the notification again.

Last night started watching the Pilot but at first couldn't get exactly what it was about, from the trailer I have an idea but the Pilot is very vague, at first all it talks about is a girls high school futbol team, the trailer shows this group of people on the woods either doing some witch craft or are cannibals, from the scores I got the idea its a good show so decided to try two more episodes and I was right about it, in order to get hooked you need to watch a few episodes, the Pilot wont do it, it wont intrigue you to keep watching, definitely when their plain crash is the climax, the part of the story that really gets you wanting more from the series.

Yellow Jackets is a series you need to pay attention to names and events, its not a series that you just consume as the episode goes, there is a big mystery of what happen after their plain crash and why even after years there are people so interested in knowing this, besides the survivors are trying to hide the details of the events, some move out and others wants the truth to come out as some sort of justice. I like how its film, that process of going between the past and present showing the characters when they were young and now older living hunted by the past.

I'll try to watch season 1 and catch up season 2, some TV Series I like to post about as episodes go out but sometimes there are too many TV Series going on at the same time between different platforms that I may do the first episode and then a season "Personal Thoughts". I just finish watching The Night Agent, I will post my personal thoughts about season one soon, although I'm not sure if there will be a season two.

"Yellowjackets" tells the narrative of a team of wildly talented high-school girls soccer players who survive a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to warring, cannibalistic clans, while also tracking the lives they have attempted to piece back together. Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher and Sammi Hanratty star as the teenagers, while Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis portray their adult counterparts as they reveal the truth about their survival 25 years later.

The first episode/pilot starts with a girl falling into a trap, this type of traps on the woods usually use to hunt animals like bears, basically a hole on the ground with either a blanket or something that can barely hold a thin layer of snow to mimic the ground, she falls, is hurt badly and has a golden neckless with a heart on it while someone all cover up, looks someone from a wild trybe or something similar is next to the trap.

Yellowjackets, a girls high school futbol team who have won their state league and now is going to the nationals, the main characters from the team as teens Shauna, Tissa, Jackie, Natalie, Lottie, Van, Akilah, Lee, Mari. As the story progress you will see some of this characters in their adult phase since the story moves back and forward in the timeline

After watching the pilot I was looking for this neckless, who was wearing one on the team and it was Jackie, the captain of the team, I notice the heart shape when she was on the car with Shauna, I really thought they were best friends but it gives me the impression that at some point they split up. The question is who is hunting who, who is part of the wild trybe??

Here we see adult Shauna, played by Melanie Lynskey, love her as an actress, she does a perfect job at roles where the character have that violence inside but doesnt show it all the time. On this scene Shauna is approach by Jessica Roberts, who said its a reporter but Shauna wont talk to her or anyone about what happen back in the woods, she doesnt talk to reports neither but eventually agree to talk, she give some details of what happen, Shauna mention how they basically stay for 19 months in the woods starving, I really cant believe in 19 months how you cant get out of the woods and ask for help. Jessica offers Shauna to write a book and a seven figure payment in advance, that really sounds too good.

Here the Melanie Lynskey I mention, after Jessica asks if this is the life she was expecting, obviously Shauna took it as an office and tells her to basically fuck off. Jessica leaves and gave her card from The Star Ledger.

Next up is adult Nathalie or as known when she was a teen ager Nat. On the pilot as I mention you wont see too much action, she is meditating in what looks like a retirement place, she also starts talking about her past experience and life as a teen ager with a group of people, she is and was a rebel since high school, always the outcast going against the rules and been different but she cares about her friends and love ones.

Another flashback of what happen with the girls on the woods, and if the girl hanging is the same who fall on the trap she is about to get shop shop, they cut her into pieces, dark moments.

At first it could be confusing trying to identify each character on both their young and adult persona, but production made sure that they are very similar on their two versions, the picture above shows Misty, she was a kind of water boy for the team, she was very weird, when you see her adult version you know its Misty, the rest of the girls constantly pick on her and were very mean to her sometimes, classic case of bullying because she was weird and may be not the pretties of all them.

On the left the Taissa as an adult, in my opinion the last of the main four characters on this story, it looks like everything goes around them, Shauna, Nat, Misty and Taissa, that makes me think that they were part of the trybe who hunt and eat the rest but thats part of the story to be develop latter on, this are my assumptions based on only the three episodes that I watch.

Taissa has a family, she is married, on the right her wife and adopted son, she is incusing into politics but always getting attacked from her past.

Days before during a practice game at high school, there was an incident where Taissa tries to take the ball from one of the girls and broke the girl leg, it was nasty, this tv series is very graphic so its may be for kids of 15+ with parent supervision.

Source

Latter on after the incident during the practice game, the girls go to a party, in there Shauna got a bit drunk and she had some things to say about what Taissa did and couldn't hold it, they all start to argue but Jackie as the captain of the team intervene and line them up, she did this dynamic to rough the edges and get everyone to like each other again, I dont know if Shauna envy Jackie or she didnt like how bossy she could be but she was cheating on her with Jackie boyfriend who ends up as her husband, very early Shauna was not Jackie's best friend as it seems.

Source

Shauna has a journal that I'm sure reveals the truth of what happen after the crash or at least tells the story from her perspective, in the meantime the episode ends showing how Nat is getting prepare to go after someone, that someone I guess is the ones who kill Jackie and others, probably the team divided into the tribe and survivors.

I like how the script builds up the suspense and pause the motion of the story at times by going back and forward on the timeline between the adult and teen version of the characters, it intrigues me who were part of the tribe, now that I know Misty is one of them I wonder who is their leader and I guess it was Taissa, Shauna or Nat since latter on another episode Nat talks to Taissa and Misty. I will finish season one to post my opinion on it and then catch up on season two to post on every episode if they are as interested. Over all YelloJackets have a score close to 8/10 on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes website, the reviews online are very good too so this is a series to keep watching.
