Hola, querido hiver.
He recuperado la costumbre de ver películas y series y aunque llevo como un par de meses haciéndolo no me había atrevido a escribir ninguna reseña. Hasta hoy. Ni qué decir tiene que no soy una cinéfila experta. No esperes aquí datos y conocimientos o un análisis sesudo. Los tengo en un nivel muy básico gracias a que en el instituto cursé una asignatura opcional de audiovisuales. Pero sí que me apetece dejar por escrito mis impresiones cuando haya alguna peli o serie que me remueva por dentro, ya sea para bien o para mal. Me dejo ya de introducciones y voy al grano: mi reseña sobre La ciudad de las estrellas o La La Land.
Confieso que esta película me daba pereza por ser un musical. Es un detalle incongruente en mí, ya que la música me encanta, en cualquier estilo. Sin embargo, mi generación ha presenciado escasos estrenos de este género que hayan resultado exitosos tanto en el ámbito interpretativo como en el musical.
Por si eso fuera poco, hasta ayer no había visto interpretar a ninguno de los actores protagonistas. He estado alejada de las novedades cinematográficas y audiovisuales durante muchos años. Conocía sus nombres y poco más, lo que considero una ventaja a la hora de evaluar su trabajo en esta cinta.
La historia nos presenta la relación de Mia (Emma Stone), una camarera que sueña con ser actriz y que acumula casting tras casting en los que no es seleccionada. Por su parte, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) es un pianista loco por el jazz que trabaja tocando donde puede, esto es, locales de baja clase.
Lo que al principio se presenta como una comedia, alegre y dinámica, va disminuyendo su ritmo conforme ambos personajes se acercan. La ambientación acompaña estos cambios, desde una gran luminosidad al inicio del film hacia una íntima oscuridad.
Los dos componentes de la pareja se apoyan mutuamente para que el otro consiga cumplir sus sueños. Ambos pasan por grandes decepciones en los que tirar la toalla es lo más sensato. Es entonces cuando el amor aflora y proporciona el impulso de motivación y autoconfianza extra que el amante necesitaba para intentarlo una vez más.
No contaré más para no hacer spoiler. Pero su final es uno de los más increíbles que he visto. Los últimos cinco minutos de película te remueven el alma y te llevan a pensar si lo que has visto hasta entonces es la realidad o parte de un sueño. Está magníficamente elaborado, nos pone delante la vida misma y creo que por eso llega tan adentro.
En cuanto al trabajo de los actores, Emma Stone consiguió el Óscar por esta película y es totalmente merecido. Pasa por todas las emociones posibles, a veces dentro de una misma escena, canta, baila, y su imagen de chica aparentemente débil es un contraste exquisito.
Sin embargo, el protagonista masculino apenas me transmitió, siento decirlo. El chico es mono, pero se pasa casi toda la película con idéntica expresión. Solamente en el final parece que intenta acariciar el nivel de su partenaire, quedándose muy por debajo. Para dejarle con mejor sabor de boca alabaré sus dotes para el baile, que me han sorprendido para bien.
La fotografía, vestuario, decoración... conforman un paisaje onírico que invita a soñar. La música es deliciosa, con melodías ya conocidas que nos conducen por el espectro emocional al completo.
En resumen, la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados. Es de esas películas que hay que ver al menos por una vez porque es un clásico del futuro.

Hi, dear hiver.
I've got back into the habit of watching films and series and although I've been doing it for a couple of months I hadn't dared to write a review. Until today. Needless to say, I'm not an expert film buff. Don't expect data and knowledge or a thorough analysis here. I have a very basic level of knowledge thanks to the fact that I took an optional audiovisual subject in high school. But I do want to write down my impressions when there is a film or series that moves me, either for better or for worse. I'll skip the introductions and get straight to the point: my review of City of Stars or La La Land.
I confess that this film made me lazy because it is a musical. It's an incongruous detail in me, since I love music, in any style. However, my generation has witnessed few releases of this genre that have been successful in both acting and musicals.
As if that wasn't enough, until yesterday I hadn't seen any of the lead actors perform. I have been out of touch with film and audiovisual news for many years. I knew their names and little else, which I consider an advantage when evaluating their work in this film.
The story follows the relationship of Mia (Emma Stone), a waitress who dreams of becoming an actress and who accumulates casting call after casting call in which she is not selected. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) is a jazz-crazed pianist who works playing wherever he can, i.e. low-class venues.
What is initially presented as a lighthearted and dynamic comedy slows down as the two characters grow closer. The setting accompanies these changes, from a brightness at the beginning of the film to an intimate darkness.
The two partners support each other's dreams. Both go through great disappointments in which throwing in the towel is the most sensible thing to do. It is then that love comes to the surface and provides the extra boost of motivation and self-confidence that the lover needed to try one more time.
I won't say more so as not to spoiler. But its ending is one of the most incredible I've ever seen. The last five minutes of the film stirs your soul and makes you wonder if what you've seen up to that point is reality or part of a dream. It's superbly crafted, it puts life itself in front of us and I think that's why it goes so deep.
As for the work of the actors, Emma Stone won the Oscar for this film and it is totally deserved. She goes through every possible emotion, sometimes within the same scene, she sings, she dances, and her image as a seemingly weak girl is an exquisite contrast.
However, the male lead barely conveyed anything to me, I'm sorry to say. The boy is cute, but he spends most of the film with the same expression. Only in the end does he seem to try to caress the level of his partner, falling far below. To leave you with a better taste in your mouth, I'll praise his dancing skills, which surprised me for the better.
The photography, costumes, decoration... create a dreamlike landscape that invites you to dream. The music is delightful, with well-known melodies that lead us through the entire emotional spectrum.
In short, I recommend it with my eyes closed. It is one of those films that you have to see at least once because it is a classic of the future.
