Smile 2 is coming so I rewatched Smile 1 on Netflix. Here is my review and comments on the movie.

Plot Summary

"Smile" is about an evil entity who possess its victims by feeding on their trauma. The movie's protagonist is a therapist, Rose Cotter who in her childhood suffered a trauma of her own. The movie starts when Rose meets a patient who told her about the evil entity who appears as a smiling person. Initially Rose dismissed the idea but later was scared when the patient slit her own throat while smiling. Soon Rose begin to suffer hallucinations where she sees smiling people. It turned out the curse of the smiling entity was passed on to her when her patient died. After several terrifying incidents, Rose found out that the only way to survive the curse is to pass it on to someone else by traumatizing them.

Characters

Sosie Bacon (13 Reasons Why) portrayed Rose well, slowly losing her mind as she struggles to fight the evil entity. The supporting cast were Kyle Gallner and Jessie T. Usher who contributed solid performances, although the film is primarily Bacon's to carry.

Comments and Review

The film's plot and tropes are similar to other movies. It is the same as other movies with evil entities going after victims such as "It Follows", "Truth or Dare" and "Midsommar". On the other hand, the movie has its own share of scares if you are a fan of the genre. It has a lot of jump scare scenes that will leave you screaming. A sequel, Smile 2 is scheduled to be released on October 18.
