Today I want to tell you about a dramatic film that I saw some time ago and that came to my mind when I read a news item about dyslexia.
Because Like Stars on Earth deals with the problem of a dyslexic child at school and in the family environment, it talks about the incomprehension and pain but also about the affection and understanding that these people can find if they are treated in the right way.
Like Stars on Earth is one of the best dramatic products that Indian cinema began to produce in 2000. It is directed by Aamir Khan and tells the story of a nine year old boy who is dyslexic (Specific Learning Disorder), a disease that until a few years ago was almost unknown and therefore ignored.
The film tells the story of Ishaan, (played by Darsheel Safary) a dyslexic child, misunderstood by everyone, in the family and at school.
He is constantly expelled from class by stern teachers who think that his He is constantly expelled from class by harsh teachers who think that he has little interest in studying and wants to loaf around instead of going to class, and he is also reprimanded and insulted at home by his father.
He has, apparently, only one talent: painting and nobody notices it until a new teacher arrives to cover a substitution in the school.
Ishaan, a tireless drawer, immediately catches the attention of Nikumbh, (played by director Aamir Khan himself) the new art teacher who immediately recognizes the boy's symptoms because he himself suffered from the disease as a child.
Without neglecting the group of students under his care, Nikumbh decides to take care of the boy personally. He thus embarked with Ishaan on a rehabilitation program in reading, writing and arithmetic. The goal is to stimulate and involve the child with empathy and patience, not with severity and rigid rules that cannot be understood. Listen and trust him so that he can express himself without fear.
Little by little, the child rediscovers the joy of living, expressing it through his greatest talent, drawing. The long road they will travel together is not without its pitfalls, but they will overcome them one by one with love and patience.
The teacher, little by little and even with the distrust of the school authorities, will gradually win the heart of the child, of the school authorities, of his fellow teachers and even of his own parents, so reluctant at the beginning to admit their son's problem.
All of them, when Ishaan wins the first prize in the school drawing contest held with the children sitting in the child. Including the parents themselves.
The best thing about this film is the awareness on the part of those of us who consider ourselves "normal", adopting a very limited and specific criterion of what is "normality", highlighting the most relevant issues and dynamics that arise when a child with this disorder is present in a group context whether it be family, school, social or any other type.
If it is at school the person will present learning difficulties in recognizing letters or numbers, in understanding the meaning of text, in following complete instructions.
All this is generally accompanied by a psychomotor clumsiness and feelings of inadequacy, distrust and isolation. He feels absolutely misunderstood and isolates himself in his own world, it is a way of withdrawing into himself to conceal his difficulties by adopting an attitude of mute defiance and rebellion.
This marginalization increases and becomes more dangerous in the school itself when the teachers themselves reprimand and punish him for not understanding his attitude. Threats of punishment that the child does not seem to be interested in and therefore they become even more infuriating, such as: "read well and out loud", or "you will fail while your classmates get ahead", "he does it on purpose", "he is always distracted", assuming that it is a whim and not a disorder.
This same environment of frustration is transferred to parents and especially to the father who, with a clearly narcissistic attitude, pretends to have "winning" children, without problems of any kind without realizing that each child or person in general has his or her own talent and, demanding more from him or her than what is prudent can mean paying a very high price.
The film "Like Stars on Earth" focuses on the very topical issue of the diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorders, conveying an important educational message with a powerful human charge.
In my opinion Like Stars on Earth is a film that should be seen by parents, educators, teachers and children themselves (those who so often inadvertently engage in fierce bullying) to fully understand the dynamics of a disorder that is as mysterious as it is easily recoverable with a spirit of acceptance and sensitivity.
It is a film that really touched me to my heart's core, because it did not feel like a forced performance, the actor-director's work is astonishingly natural.
I think it should be distributed free of charge in all schools as part of a course for the treatment of dyslexia, in order to understand it better and to fight it together with efficiency and solidarity.

Hoy quiero comentarles una película dramática que vi hace algún tiempo y que me vino a la memoria en oportunidad de leer una noticia relativa a la dislexia.
Porque en definitiva Estrellas en la tierra trata la problemática de un niño disléxico en la escuela y en ambiente familiar, habla de la incomprensión y del dolor pero también de los afectos y la comprensión que estas persona spueden encontrar si son tratadas en el modo justo.
Estrellas en la tierra es uno de los mejores productos dramáticos que comenzó a elaborar a partir del 2000 el cine de la India, es dirigida por Aamir Khan y cuenta la historia de un niño de nueve años que disléxico (Trastorno Específico del Aprendizaje) una enfermedad que hasta hace algunos años era casi desconocida, y por lo tanto ignorada.
El film narra la historia de Ishaan, (interpretado por Darsheel Safary) un niño disléxico, incomprendido por todos, en la familia y en la escuela.
Constantemente expulsado de clase por maestros severos que piensan que lo suyo sea poco aficción al estudio y ganas de holgazanear en vez de concurrir a clase es también reprendido e insultado duramente a casa por su padre.
Tiene, aparentemente, un solo talento: la pintura y nadie se da cuenta de ello hasta que llega un nuevo maestro a cubrir una suplencia en la escuela.
Ishaan, es un dibujante incansable, y esto llama en seguida la atención de Nikumbh, (interpretato por el propio director Aamir Khan) el nuevo maestro de arte recién llegado que reconoce en seguida los síntomas del niño porque él mismo de pequeño sufrió la enfermedad.
Sin descuidar el grupo de alumnos a su cargo Nikumbh decide ocuparse personalmente del niño. De esta manera emprende con Ishaan un programa de rehabilitación en lectura, escritura y cálculo. El objetivo es estimular e implicar al niño con empatía y paciencia, no con severidad y normas rígidas que no pueden ser comprendidas. Escucha y le confianza para que se expre sin miedo.
Poco a poco, el niño redescubre la alegría de vivir, expresándola a través de su mayor talento, el dibujo. El largo camino que recorrerán junto no está exento de escollos, pero los superarán uno a uno como amor y paciencia.
El profesor de a poco y hasta con la desconfianza de las autoridades de la escuela, se irá ganando paulatinamente el corazón del niño, de las autoridades escolásticas, de sus colegas maestros e incluso de sus mismos padres, tan reaccios al inicio a admitir el problema de su hijo.
Todos ellos, cuando Ishaan gana el primer premio en el concurso de dibujo en la escuela celebrado con los niños sentado en lal niño. Incluyendo los propios padres.
Lo mejor de esta película es la concientización por parte de los que nos consideramos "normales", adoptandun criterio muy limitado y específico de lo que es "normalidad", poniendo de relieve las cuestiones y dinámicas más relevantes que surgen cuando un niño con este trastorno está presente en un contexto grupal ya sea fa,miliar, escolástico, social o de cualquier otro tipo.
Si es en la escuela la persona presentará dificultades de aprendizaje para reconocer las letras o los números, para comprender el significado del texto, para seguir instrucciones completas.
Todo esto generalmente es aocmpañado por una torpeza psicomotriz y sentimientos de inadecuación, desconfianza y aislamiento. Se siente absolutamente incomprendido y se aísla en su mondo, es un modo de encerrarse en sí mismo para disimular sus dificultades adoptando una actitud de mudo desafío y rebeldía.
Esta marginación aumenta y se hace más peligrosa en la propia escuela cuando los mismos maestros lo reprueban y castigan por no entender su actitud. Com amenazas de castigo que al niño parecen no interesarlo y por esto se infurian aún más como: "lee bien y en voz alta", o "suspenderás mientras tus compañeros salen adelante", "lo hace a propósito", "siempre está distraído" presuponiendo que se trata de un capricho y no de un trastorno.
Ese mismo anbiente de frustración se traslada a los padres y en especial al padre que, con una actitud netamente narcisista, pretende tener hijos "ganadores", sin problemas de ningún tipo sin advertir cada niñ o persona en general tiene su propio talento y, exigir de él o ella más allá de lo prudencial puede significar pagar un precio muy elevado.
La película "Estrellas en la Tierra" se centra en el tema tan actual del diagnóstico de los Trastornos Específicos del Aprendizaje, transmitiendo un importante mensaje educativo con una poderosa carga humana.

En mi opinión Estrellas en la tierra es una película que deberían ver los padres, los educadores, los maestros y los niños mismos (esos que tantas veces inadvertidamente hacen un feroz bullismo) para comprender plenamente la dinámica de un trastorno tan misterioso como fácilmente recuperable con un espíritu de aceptación y sensibilidad.
Es una película que realmente me ha conmovido en lo más íntimo de mi corazón, porque no pareciera una actuación forzada, el trabajo del actor-director es de una naturalidad asombrosa.
Creo que debería distribuirse gratuitamente en todas las escuelas como parte integrante de un curso destinado al tratamiento de la dislexia, para comprenderlo y entenderlo mejor, y combatirlo entre todos con eficacia y solidaridad.
