Today I want to share with all of you the review of a film that I saw again a few days ago -for the second time- after several years of having seen it for the first time.
It is Road to Perdition, an American dramatic film, set in a mafia plot but very different from the classic "cliché" that surrounds this type of film.
The film is from 2002, directed by Sam Mendes, an English film and theatre director although his surname seems to indicate a Brazilian origin - in reality his father is from Trinidad and Tobago, of Portuguese and Italian origin, and his mother is English - a nice mixture of races and its main protagonists are Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman and Daniel Craig.
Road to Perdition won the Oscar for Best Cinematography.
The film is set in the US state of Illinois in 1931, when the North Country is emerging from the Great Depression.
Michael "Mike" Sullivan is on the one hand a loving husband and married gangster father to Irish mob boss John Rooney, who has raised him as his own son and to whom Mike considers he owes everything in life.
The mob boss has a son who acts as his lieutenant although he is actually more violent and less "gentle" than his father, which is why his father is hesitant to place him at the top of his mafia organisation. He is afraid that in his fits of rage he will ruin everything.
And indeed, in one of them, after a violent argument, he kills Finn McGovern, a competitor of his father's who has begun to cause him problems and who is suspected of having stolen him. However, the mob boss's instructions had been not to eliminate his eventual rival but to try to reconcile their differences peacefully. At least, at first.
Unbeknownst to Mike, his young son Michael had hidden in the car and unwittingly witnessed the criminal's execution, thus discovering his father's real job: bodyguard to a gangster and sometimes his own hitman.
This creates a situation of mutual distrust in the group: Mike assures Rooney and his son that what happened will remain a secret and that his son will not open his mouth.
Connor, jealous of his father's esteem for Mike, decides to eliminate Mike's entire family on his own without consulting his father for security reasons, although in reality his feelings are driven by jealousy and envy at feeling displaced within the criminal organisation.
The situation begins to degenerate when Connor hires a hit man to eliminate Mike but fails in his attempt. When Mike returns home to find his family wiped out by Connor, the only one to be spared is Michael who was not in the house at the time.
At this point Mike can't turn back and will go to any lengths to eliminate Connor even if it means alienating Rooney whom he considers a true adoptive father.
Other Mafia families begin to act as intermediaries to avoid further bloodshed, including Chicago boss Frank Nitti, who does not want to antagonise Rooney and for this reason refuses to help Mike discover Connor's true whereabouts, which is in fact kept hidden by himself.
Given the turn of events, Rooney orders Mike's elimination, but makes it clear that nothing must happen to little Michael.
As danger surrounds them, Mike and his son realise that they are closer than ever in family affections.
In the interim and as Mike investigates Connor's accounts he encounters Maguire the assassin charged with eliminating him and is wounded in the shootout. He takes refuge on a farm where two elderly farmers heal him.
In reality, Mike's objective in investigating Rooney's accounts was to prove to his father that his son was stealing from him by opening accounts in the names of deceased people and that the altercation at the beginning had been provoked by Connor who had provoked and killed Finn because he had discovered the fraud.
However, Rooney, true to his patriarchal yet mafia-like style, tells him that he will never betray his son and will do anything to protect him.
At this point Mike knows he has no choice but to eliminate his adoptive father, who accepts death with resignation, and the two bodyguards who protect him. In turn, the Chicago boss, knowing that Rooney is dead, is no longer interested in protecting his son and gives him to Mike to kill him and thus take revenge for the murder of his family.
When everything seems to be heading towards a peaceful end to his life in a cabin on the shores of Lake Michigan with his son, he is discovered by Maguire - Rooney's hit man - who intends to finish his job and shoots him, seriously wounding him.
Near death, he takes a dying photo of him as he does of all his victims as proof of the job being done. At that moment the young Michael gets hold of the gun and aims it at him without daring to shoot.
The assassin doesn't actually intend to harm him as he has promised the mafia boss but inadvertently turns his back on Mike who is lying on the floor in a pool of blood and with his last strength he picks up the gun and shoots him dead. Mike can now die peacefully in his son's arms.
Michael will return to the farm of the two old men who cared for him and his father and grow up remembering those six weeks during which, together with his father, he had seen all that the human soul and pain can transmit from father to son, because in the end, as he himself says, his father was neither good nor bad, he was simply his father.

Hoy quiero compartir con todos ustedes la reseña de una película que volví a ver hace pocos días -por segunda vez- después de varios años de haberla vista por primera vez.
Se trata de Camino a la Perdición —titulada en inglés Road to Perdition— película dramática estadounidens, ambientada en una trama de carácter mafioso pero muy distinta del clásico "cliché" que rodea este tipo de películas.
La película es del 2002, está dirigida por Sam Mendes, director de cine y teatro inglés aunque su apellido pareciera indicar un origen brasileño -en realidad su padre es oriundo de Trinidad y Tobago, de origen portugués e italiano, y su madre es inglesa- una linda mezcla de razas y sus principales protagonistas son por Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman y Daniel Craig.
Camino a la Perdición obtuvo el premio Oscar a la mejor fotografía.
La película se ambienta en los EE. UU. en el estado de Illinois en el año 1931, cuando el país del norte está saliendo de la Gran Depresión.
Michael "Mike" Sullivan es por un lado un cariñoso marido y padre casado gángster para el jefe de la mafia irlandesa John Rooney, que lo ha criado como si fuera su propio hijo y a quien Mike considera deberle todo en la vida.
El jefe mafioso tiene un hijo que actúa como su lugarteniente aunque en realidad tiene un carácter más violento y menos "apacible" de su padre, razón por la cuál éste duda a colocarlo en los vértices más altas de su organización mafiosa. Tiene miedo que en sus accesos de ira lo eche todo a perder.
Y en efecto, en uno de ellos y luego de una violenta discusión, mata a Finn McGovern un competidor de su padre que ha comenzado a causarle problemas y sobre el cuál corre la sospecha que lo haya robado. Sin embargo las instrucciones del jefe mafioso habían sido no de eliminar a su eventual rival sino tratar de conciliar pacíficamente las diferencias. Al menos, al inicio.
Sin que Mike lo supiera su hijo pequeño Michael se había escondido en el auto y, sin quererlo, había presenciado la ejecución del delincuente, llegando a descubrir de esta manera el verdadero trabajo del padre: guardaespaldas de un gangster y, a veces, asesino a sueldo del mismo.
Se crea de esta manera una situación de recíproca desconfianza en el gripo: Mike asegura a Rooney y a su hijo que lo sucedido seró un secreto y que su hijo no abrirá la boca.
Connor celoso de la estima que su padre profesa a Mike decide eliminar por su cuenta a toda la familia de Mike sin consultar al padre por motivos de seguridad, aunque en realidad sus sentimientos son movidos por la celosía y la envidia de sentirse desplazado dentro de la organización criminal.
La situación comienza a degenrar cuando Connor contrata un asesino a sueldo para que elimine a Mike pero fracasa en su intento. Cuando Mike vuelve a casa encuentra a su familia exterminada por Connor, el único a salvarse es Michael quien en ese momento no estaba en la casa.
A este punto Mike no puede dar marcha atrás y tratará por todos los medios de eliminar a Connor aunque esto signifique enemistarse con Rooney a quien considera un verdadero padre adoptivo.
Comienzan a actuar como intermediarios otras familias mafiosas para evitar mayores derramamientos de sangre, entre ellos el boss Frank Nitti de Chicago, quien no quiere enemistarse con Rooney y por este motivo le niega ayuda a Mike para descubrir el verdadero paradero de Connor, que en realidad se mantiene ocultado por é mismo.
Ante el cariz que han tomado los acontecimientos Rooney ordena la eliminación de Mike aunque deja en claro que al pequeño Michael no debe sucederle nada.
Mientras el peligro los va rodeando Mike y su hijo se dan cuenta que están más que nunca acercados en los afectos familiares.
En el interim y mientras Mike investiga las cuentas de Connor se encuentra con Maguire el asesino encargado de eliminarlo y es herido en el tiroteo. Se refugia en una granja donde dos ancianos agricultores lo curan.
En realidad el objetivo que perseguía Mike al investigar las cuentas de Rooney era el de demostrar al padre que su hijo lo estaba robando abriendo cuentas a nombre de personas fallecidas y que en realidad el altercado del inicio había sido provocado por Connor quien había provocado y matado a Finn porque éste había descubierto el fraude cometido.
Sin embargo Rooney fiel a su estilo patriarcal, aunque mafioso, le dice que nunca traicionará a su hijo y hará cualquier cosa para protegerlo.
A este punto Mike sabe que no le queda otro camino que eliminar a su padre adoptivo quien acepta la muerte con resignación y de los dos guardaespaldas que lo protegen. A su vez el boss de Chicago al saber que Rooney ha muerto no tiene más interés en proteger a su hijo y se lo entregue a Mike para que lo mate y se vengue de esa manera del asesinato de su familia.
Cuando todo parece encaminarse a un final de vida tranquilo en una cabaña a las orillas del Lago Michigan en compañia de su hijo es decubierto por Maguire -el asesino a sueldo de Rooney- quien pretende terminar a cabo su trabajo y le dispara hiriéndolo gravemente.
Próximo a la muerte le saca una foto agonizante como hace con todas sus víctimas como prueba del cumplimiento del trabajo. En ese momento el joven Michael se apodera del arma y le apunta sin atreverse a disparar.
El asesino en realidad no intenta hacerle daño ya que así lo ha prometido al boss mafioso pero inadvertidamente le da la espalda a Mike que está tirado en el suelo en un charco de sangre y con sus últimas fuerzas recoge la pistola y dispara matándolo. Ahora Mike puede morir tranquilamente en los brazos de su hijo.
Michael volverá a la granja de los dos ancianos que los cuidaron, a él y a su padre y crecerá recordando aquellas seis semanas durante las cuales, junto a su padre, había visto todo lo que el alma y el dolor humanos pueden transmitir de padre a hijo, porque en definitiva como él mismo lo dice su padre no era ni bueno ni malo, era simplemente su padre.
