Thelma

The movie Thelma, about the psychological and spiritual journey of a young woman with supernatural powers, presents the lifestyle of an extremely conservative family and the inner life of a young woman who breaks away from this lifestyle and steps into freedom by starting university.

Thelma, the character who gives the movie its title and who discovers powers that even she does not know about, focuses on the dark powers she begins to discover from the first moment she breaks away from her conservative lifestyle and steps into freedom.

The Norwegian film opens with the character Thelma starting university in Oslo. In fact, in order to understand the character's life and thoughts, I find it right to go back to a time before the story. The details of her past life, which find their place in the progression of the story, are very effective in the atmosphere of the movie.

The character, who was raised according to the strict beliefs of his family, successfully reflects his inner turmoil to the audience while trying to get used to his new life where he starts his university education.

The emotional attraction he experiences with a woman named Anja, whom he meets during his adjustment process, reveals the supernatural power of the character, which he had never known until that moment. This power also reveals Thelma's repressed desires and fears, and allows the character to confront her past.

While this confrontation takes on the mystery aspect of the film, the unknowns of the past that are revealed piece by piece contribute to the fluency of the film.

The moments when she moves from a life of oppression to a life of freedom are in the style of a typical teen movie, while the moments of self-discovery turn into a horror and psychological thriller.

In one sentence, I can say that the movie is character-driven and about what happens around her.

The character's previous life, the life he desires, and the life he is forced into because of the powers he possesses are combined quite successfully.

I can say that the beginning and the progression of the story was perfect. Although the idea of wanting to know some scenes in advance comes to the fore, knowing those moments would probably take away the mystery and spoil the enjoyment of watching.

As someone who has seen the movie, I find it valuable that universal themes such as family ties, oppression, faith, search for identity and sexuality are dealt with through a single character and that all these are blended with supernatural forces.

While the film offers atmospheric tension, it also emphasizes the character-driven inner world. I think that each of us, regardless of gender, will have the habit of adapting something from the inner world of the character to our own lives.

I should say in advance that this will be both negative and positive adaptation. I would recommend the movie to anyone who likes psychological thrillers, but if you approach the story from the point of view of social taboos, you will miss a lot.

Instead of generalizing, I think it is better to think individually and think in that way.

Thank you for being here and reading, take care and goodbye!
