The movies that bring the unruly and ruthless world of the Wild West to the big screen have always attracted my attention both in terms of locations and visual shots. Witnessing what people do to create their own justice in places where the arms of justice fall short is appealing in terms of viewing pleasure and I watch every "Wild West" themed movie I find.
2023's Surrounded was just one of them and it has already become one of my favorites. While watching the unrelenting conditions of the 1840s, the harshness of nature and the struggle of mankind to survive, it was possible to observe that personal interests would be enough to lead a person astray.
The movie, almost all of which tells the story of the heroes as they travel from one point to another, provides a perfect time with its visual effects and well-shot scenes.
As the protagonists do their own justice, ending someone's life or saving one's own life is as easy or as difficult as passing a judgment based entirely on conscience. The short line between life and death is so effective in determining the next action that it is impossible not to feel the tension and emotion while watching.
The fact that the main character Mo Washington (played by Letitia Wright) had to hide her gender throughout her journey to achieve her dreams was like a spice that added to the flavor of the movie.
The fact that the journey starts as a man, continues as a woman and ends as a man may be presented as a short summary of the movie, but it may overshadow the tremendous acting of Letitia Wright, who gives life to Mo's character. The fact that a woman caught between life and death has to identify herself as a man for her own safety and the safety of those around her is very well handled and the actress's successful performance in gender transitions was remarkable. The performance in gender transitions offers a character study.
While the adventures of a woman whose only goal is to reach his destination safely are made meaningful through the criminal gang and its leader he encounters during his journey, watching someone who is good at heart not compromising his values at all costs enriches the experience.
I definitely recommend you to watch the movie. Witnessing and participating in the dialogues between people with opposite values can improve your empathy. Sometimes you will agree, sometimes you will criticize, but you will not regret what you watch.
Finally, I would like to talk about my favorite scenes in the movie. The moments where the society of the period was staged and reflected on the screen were the most entertaining moments of the movie. I think categorizing ourselves as humans is one of the most successful things we do in the world and will shape the future as it has influenced the past! I wish everyone who will watch it a good time.
