Making Brown Steam Cake

Hello everyone, in this article I share about how we make brown steam cake. Unlike the steamed cake I shared before, this time we use palm sugar as one of the ingredients. The brown sugar is the reason why the color of the cake becomes brown hence we don't use food color in this cake.

So, my wife (she is the one to cook) use the following ingredients:

  • wheat flour, 250 gr
  • salt, a quarter of tea spoon
  • baking powder, a quarter of tea spoon
  • baking soda, a quarter of tea spoon
  • sugar, 65 gram
  • palm sugar, 200 gram
  • egg, 2
  • pandan leaves, 2
  • water, 250 ml
  • vanilla essence

She put all the ingredients, except palm sugar, in one basin, and then she mixed them together. Next, she put the dough under the electric mixer to blend the ingredients even more.

The palm sugar, since it had hard texture, could not be mixed with the rest right away. Instead, we melted the palm sugar by boiling it or mixing it with a glass of water. When it became liquid, we put it with the rest of the ingredients in the basin.

After perfectly blended, we put doughs into paper cups. The paper cups contained the dough were then placed on aluminum or steel cup to hold the paper cup. The reason for this is that the dough would not spill out of the cup since it was rather liquid. Once ready, we placed these cups into the steamer.

We only steamed the cakes for about fifteen minutes and we already had the brown steamed cakes. In our place, Bali, brown steamed cake were used for various purposes such as snack as coffee companion, or offerings for temples.
