With her skirts swishing through the crystal clear water,
the story of a solo Stingray as she sailed into the still waters of Kianninny Bay,
shimmying along the sea floor as she searched for
her fresh seafood dinner for the day.

The Stingray: An enormous stingray with a deep smooth rhomboidal disc, diagonal rows of pale pores on each side of the head, a short depressed tail tapering towards the sharp finely serrated spine, and a shallow w-shaped groove on the underside just behind the gill openings.
The tail is armed with large tubercles and thorns, and lacks a dorsal fin. The Smooth Stingray is greyish-brown above, with a pale underside, and somewhat darker pigment above the eye and on the tail tip.
The large serrated spine on the tail is venomous, and is used for defence. Smooth Stingrays are potentially very dangerous to humans due to their large size, and have been responsible for very painful injuries and at least one death in Australia.

Kianinniy Bay: Kianinny Bay is a sheltered inlet in Tathra, known for its resident stingrays and pristine blue water.
It is a lovely swimming area and usually protected from the wind. Hop into the water via the beach or rocks, or jump off the jetty for a thrill.
Kianinny Bay was the port for the Bega area prior to the construction of Tathra Wharf.

This area along the Far South Coast in NSW, Australia is one of the most stunning and still pristine coastal areas in the world with only a small population spread out over the whole area as it is just slightly too far away from both Melbourne and Sydney (still thankfully) and I can't recommend visiting it to see all of the extraordinary natural attractions next time you can get to Australia. And don't hesitate to contact me if you do as I will always have a spare room for my Hive family and since I grew up there and have also spent 30+years living around Australia, I'm a damn great tour guide too! 😃
