The church of Santo Domingo, in Soria -which until relatively modern times, was under the patronage of Santo Tomé or Tomás, the unbelieving apostle, to whom possibly, among other things, we owe the popular saying of 'sticking your finger in the sore '- stands out, not only for its extraordinary beauty and harmony -which enhances and increases even more, if possible, the added value of the modern buildings that surround it- or for being considered one of the most superb examples of Spanish Romanesque Art, but also, because in the 12th century the betrothal of King Alfonso VIII was celebrated there - whose name proudly bears the best hotel in the city, excluding the elegant and sophisticated Parador Nacional, which, on the contrary, bears the name of one of the greatest Spanish poets of all time: Antonio Machado- with the daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine -whose troubadour court would delight any lover of medieval history- characters, whose intense life was recreated in a cult film by the English director, Anthony Harvey, entitled 'The Lion in Winter' and masterfully performed by two great actors: Peter O'toole -whom movie lovers will remember as the famous Lawrence of Arabia - and Katherine Hepburn, who among many other embroidered performances, was also 'Adam's rib' of another great: Spencer Tracy.
La iglesia de Santo Domingo, en Soria -que hasta tiempos relativamente modernos, estuvo bajo la advocación de Santo Tomé o Tomás, el apóstol descreído, al que posiblemente, entre otras cosas, le debemos el refrán popular de ‘meter el dedo en la llaga’- destaca, no sólo por su extraordinaria belleza y armonía -que engrandece y aumenta aun más, si cabe, el valor añadido de los edificios modernos que la rodean- o por estar considerada como uno de los más soberbios ejemplos del Arte Románico español, sino también, porque en ella se celebraron, en el siglo XII, los esponsales del rey Alfonso VIII -cuyo nombre luce con orgullo el mejor hotel de la ciudad, excluyendo el elegante y sofisticado Parador Nacional, que por el contrario, luce el nombre de uno de los más grandes poetas españoles de todos los tiempos: Antonio Machado- con la hija de Enrique II de Inglaterra y Leonor de Aquitania -cuya corte trovadoresca, haría las delicias de cualquier amante de la historia medieval- personajes, cuya intensa vida fue recreada en una película de culto del director inglés, Anthony Harvey, titulada ‘El león en invierno’ y magistralmente interpretada por dos grandiosos actores: Peter O’toole -al que los amantes del cine, recordarán como el famoso Lawrence de Arabia- y Katherine Hepburn, que entre otras muchas bordadas interpretaciones, fue, además, ‘la costilla de Adán’ de otro grande: Spencer Tracy.
