Perhaps Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was right when, in one of his best-known poems, he dreamily concluded that those black swallows, which for some unknown reason had caught his attention, never returned to Seville.
The same does not happen, of course, with autumn, which unlike them, always returns to Madrid, whose inhabitants usually welcome and admire it, as befits that genius and lord of beauty, however ephemeral it may be, in the end.
And it is that, season after season, we continue to be motivated by those poetic lessons of melancholy, of fleetingness, of death and rebirth that envelop, with their layer of leaves carried by the wind, the most picturesque places in our city.
Tal vez tuviera razón Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, cuando, en uno de sus poemas más conocidos, concluyó, ensoñadoramente, que aquellas golondrinas negras, que, por algún motivo desconocido le llamaron la atención, nunca más regresaron a Sevilla.
No ocurre lo mismo, desde luego, con el otoño, que a diferencia de ellas, siempre regresa a un Madrid, cuyos habitantes solemos recibirlo y admirarlo, como corresponden a ese genio y señor de la belleza, por muy efímera, que, en el fondo, sea ésta.
Y es que, estación tras estación, continuamos motivándonos con esas poéticas lecciones de melancolías, de fugacidades, de muerte y de renacimiento que envuelven, con su capa de hojas llevadas por el viento, los lugares más pintorescos de nuestra ciudad.
