There is hardly a dish in any country that does not use pepper as a spice. In Indonesia since the 16th century (previously known as Nusantara), the pepper plant has been cultivated by the people and has become one of the mainstay commodities.
Indonesian pepper became famous in Europe. Traders from Europe, such as Spain, Portugal, Holland, France, and England, competed to come to Indonesia to the point of risking their lives by wading through the miles of the Indian Ocean which is notoriously fierce just to hunt for pepper. Because of Pepper too, small kingdoms in Indonesia were colonized by Europeans starting from the early 17th century period.
