I know if you go around to ask many Farmers what tilling is, I bet it's only going to be few Farmers that can define what tilling is but that does not mean that they don't engage in tilling their farm or garden. A lot of Farmers do some activities in their farm without knowing the reason for doing it or the name that's attached to such activity. But then tilling is a kind of activity being carried out before the planting proper. Funniest thing, some don't till before they plant or grow their plants be it crops or vegetables.

What's tilling and why do I find it so important to do?

First thing we need to ask ourselves is that, is there a particular best way of farming? Sometimes it's best to do what really works for you. Before I go further, I need to define what tilling is. Tilling in the farm is the activity carried out on soil most especially a small pieces of land by turning the soil without necessary to dig deep. Meanwhile, it's safe to understand the difference between tilling and making heaps.

What's the difference between tilling and making heaps?

In my own case, I feel both of them are important but it's the farmer's intention that will define which one is important at that particular time. Tilling is just semi plowing, plowing means you are digging deep like making heaps but tilling means you are just turning by stirring. But in my own case where I want to grow vegetables, I feel tilling is the best method to use because the land seems to be very rich and fertile considering things that going on it.

Reasons I'm going for tilling.

Even sometimes the condition of the land or soil will choose the best method to use. The land I'm using, it's like a dumping ground for refuse. I had to pack the refuse to one side before I even start tilling. So in the process of tilling, I had to get rid of some plastics again.

What tools did I use for the tilling process?

Of course there are different method that can be used to carry out the tilling process. But for me, I used the local method of tilling with Hoe. Although some people find it energy sapping but I found it less energy sapping but maybe because it depends on area of land you are tilling. This is the activity I engaged myself this morning.
