Pet Peeves: My Likes and Dislikes

This week’s Hive Naija Prompt is quite interesting and educating. The first thing I did after seeing the first topic was visit Google to check for the meaning of “PET PEEVES.” It means “something that a particular person finds especially annoying.” After having a clear understanding, I couldn't help but think about a lot of people who fall into this category. I have a lot of friends and family on this list. I love them and can’t do without them, but the very funny things they do turn me off every now and then. This piece is not about them but about things I love and those I really find irritating in general.

After getting an ample understanding of the prompt, I discovered there are several pet peeves, such as spitting, slurping loudly, gum chewing, pen-chewing, and more. I don’t think I like any of the ones listed, but the one I really find irritating is someone being mannerless. I hope this makes the list because I have encountered a lot of rude people. Being rude is not related to age; I’ve met rude adults and rude children. The irritating thing for me is their confidence. Most of these rude peeps are so confident and hard to correct. The more you try to guide them, the worse they get at being rude.

I know a lady who can say anything to anyone at anytime, regardless of the setting or the caliber of the person. I have seen people get into trouble by being rude, and I hope she doesn’t fall into that category soon. Aside from being rude, I dislike people chewing loudly. The “mpta, mpta” sound their mouth makes is really irritating. Unless someone is physically challenged, which is understandable, I don’t think chewing loudly or even with your mouth wide open is a thing to do in public or anywhere on earth. Even people from remote areas know better!

Something I really like, especially if I’m on a date with a lady, is to periodically talk in between movies. Not me doing the talking, but the lady periodically bringing up conversations around the movie. I have experienced this twice, and it was so lovely. It comes like a short romantic break, then you resume your movie. I don’t like having to narrate the movie after we have watched it; it wastes a lot of time we could have spent knowing each other or doing something else.

I could recall one of the lovely experiences I had. After leaving the cinema, we went straight to the lady’s house. She was staying with her parents, so I got to meet her family—a lovely set of people. We never really had to sit and review the movie because we’ve done all of that at the cinema.

Another pet peeve I find annoying is someone staring at my phone! Like, what is your business, and who invited you in the first place? Some people are so good at not minding their business. They can take their nosiness anywhere! I have had awkward situations where I had to stop what I was doing on my phone to prevent an intruder from shamelessly peeping through all I was doing. I wonder how people can be so confident with the display of such a nosy act.

Have a great week, y’all.
