Experience Using Figma in Designing UI/UX

Figma is a revolutionary collaborative interface design tool that enables users to create seamless designs, prototypes, and more. It allows developers to develop mock-ups to build whatever is needed. My journey with Figma began with initial struggles due to unfamiliarity with its functionalities. However, working on a project with my team required us to learn quickly. We utilized the free tutorials on Figma's website at Figma Design Basics. Additionally, we found valuable resources through free courses on Udemy and YouTube.

Learning the Basics

The first phase of our project was all about learning and familiarizing ourselves with Figma. The tutorials on Figma's website were beneficial. They covered everything from creating frames and components to more advanced features like prototyping and creating interactive elements. The resources were well-structured and easy to follow, making the learning process more manageable.

We also explored free courses on platforms like Udemy and instructional videos on YouTube. These resources provided diverse perspectives and tips on using Figma efficiently. Moreover, it taught us about various shortcuts, best practices, and advanced techniques that significantly enhanced our productivity.

Brainstorming and Planning

After gaining a solid understanding of Figma, my team and I embarked on designing a UI for an application. Our project aimed to develop an app that helps users find the perfect jeepney route in Davao City. This idea stemmed from recognizing the need for a transportation guide for people unfamiliar with the city and its jeepney routes.

We didn't dive into designing immediately; instead, we spent considerable time planning. Each team member contributed ideas, which we consolidated into a single document. We brainstormed and listed possible features and functionalities that our app should have. This collaborative approach ensured that we covered all aspects and developed a well-rounded concept.

Initial Design Phase

We moved on to the initial design phase with our plan in place. Applying the basic design principles we learned from Figma's tutorials was crucial during this stage. The first day was challenging, as we were beginners and faced integrating numerous ideas into a cohesive interface. We created rough sketches and wireframes, experimenting with different layouts and structures.

One of the significant challenges was ensuring that our design was user-friendly and intuitive. We aimed for simplicity, providing new users an easy way to navigate the app. This meant constantly revisiting our design, making adjustments, and seeking feedback from team members.

Iterative Design Process

On the second day, we were focused on refining our design. We selected the app's colors, fonts, and icons, including functional elements such as the Sign-Up and Finish buttons. Our design was still a draft, as we made numerous edits and explored various ideas to determine what worked best for our app. We tested different color schemes and typography options, ensuring they aligned with our app's purpose and target audience.

Our UI design had significantly improved by the third day, with added functionalities aligned with user needs. We made the interface simple so new users could easily navigate it. When encountering unfamiliar design elements, we referred to Figma's tutorials or searched online for guidance. This continuous learning process honed our Figma skills.

Prototyping and Testing

Finally, we focused on creating a working prototype on the fourth day. Prototyping in Figma is straightforward and highly effective. We linked various screens and added interactive elements to simulate the user experience. This step was crucial for identifying potential issues and making necessary adjustments before the final presentation.

We also conducted usability testing within our team. Each member acted as a user, navigating the app and providing feedback. This iterative process of testing and refining ensured that our design was polished and ready for presentation.

Presentation and Feedback

Our team presentation was the culmination of our hard work. Despite initial nerves, we confidently showcased our design. The audience appreciated our efforts, and their positive feedback was gratifying. Presenting our prototype demonstrated the effectiveness of Figma in bringing ideas to life efficiently and effectively.

Conclusion

My experience with Figma was both educational and enjoyable. It allowed my team and me to bring our ideas to life efficiently and effectively. Figma's collaborative features and comprehensive tutorials made the design process smoother and more accessible. For someone looking to enhance their UI/UX design skills, Figma is an excellent tool that fosters creativity, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Embrace Figma, and you'll discover a robust platform that transforms your design process into an exciting and rewarding journey. Whether a beginner or an experienced designer, Figma's solid features and user-friendly interface make it the ideal choice for all your design needs.
