The first time I enjoyed a live-action superhero series was when I decided to give a chance to the Amazon series called Boys, which in my opinion ended up being a masterpiece.

I absolutely loved their use of black humor, and how they portrayed realistic personalities in people who have superpowers and can pretty much do anything they want, with realistic I mean far from the superheroes we all know. People aren't perfect, and superheroes shouldn't be perfect either, in fact, they should probably be very corrupt just like most politicians holding a lot of power are. The more power a person has, the most likely he/she is to eventually become corrupt.

In recent years I also started to enjoy DC Comics' approach to their superhero stories, and the dark tone they decided to adopt in contrast with Marvel's approach which is much more focused on non-stop comedy.

Finding good productions with black humor, or at least with politically incorrect humor isn't really easy, so I always am on the lookout for new series or films that belong to this niche genre.

I think by now you can realize why I was attracted to giving PeaceMaker a watch. This superhero is far from ideal, he is far from perfect, he is simply a defective person with superpowers, and the best of all is the type of humor used in this story. Black and politically incorrect humor, absolutely fantastic for me.

What was the story about?

The story begins with a small recap of the main events in the last Justice League film, which help us remember the situation PeaceMaker has to deal with at the beginning of this series.

Something I really liked about this series is that they quickly set the tone of the entire show in the first 2 or 3 minutes. There was a hilarious conversation between PeaceMaker and a guy mopping the floor that could have only been the result of a genius writer with a very audacious type of humor.

Another example is the muscular face exercise dialogue from episode 1 was hilarious, and the best part is this series provides this type of comedy scene several times per episode.

La primera vez que disfruté de una serie de superhéroes de acción real fue cuando decidí darle una oportunidad a la serie de Amazon llamada The Boys, que en mi opinión terminó siendo una obra maestra.

Me encantó su uso del humor negro y cómo retrataron personalidades realistas en personas que tienen superpoderes y pueden hacer prácticamente cualquier cosa que quieran, con realista quiero decir lejos de los superhéroes que todos conocemos. Las personas no son perfectas, y los superhéroes tampoco deberían ser perfectos, de hecho, probablemente deberían ser muy corruptos como lo son la mayoría de los políticos que tienen mucho poder. Cuanto más poder tiene una persona, más probable es que eventualmente se vuelva corrupta.

En los últimos años también comencé a disfrutar del enfoque de DC Comics en sus historias de superhéroes, y el tono oscuro que decidieron adoptar en contraste con el enfoque de Marvel, que está mucho más centrado en la comedia sin parar.

Encontrar buenas producciones con humor negro, o al menos con humor políticamente incorrecto, no es fácil, por lo que siempre estoy en la búsqueda de nuevas series o películas que pertenezcan a este nicho.

Creo que ahora puedes darte cuenta de por qué estaba decidido a darle un vistazo a PeaceMaker. Este superhéroe está lejos de ser ideal, está lejos de ser perfecto, simplemente es una persona defectuosa con superpoderes, y lo mejor de todo es el tipo de humor que se usa en esta historia. Humor negro y políticamente incorrecto, absolutamente fantástico para mí.

¿De qué trataba la historia?

La historia comienza con un pequeño resumen de los eventos principales de la última película de la Liga de la Justicia, que nos ayudan a recordar la situación a la que se enfrenta PeaceMaker al comienzo de esta serie.

Algo que realmente me gustó de esta serie es que marcaron rápidamente el tono de todo el programa en los primeros 2 o 3 minutos. Hubo una conversación súper cómica entre PeaceMaker y un tipo que limpiaba el piso que solo podría haber sido el resultado de un escritor nivel genio con un tipo de humor muy audaz.

Otro ejemplo es que el diálogo del ejercicio de músculos de la cara del episodio 1 fue divertidísimo, y la mejor parte es que esta serie ofrece este tipo de escena de comedia varias veces por episodio.

If you wonder who this writer was, it was James Gunn, the main director and writer of this series. I gotta say the creative risk he took in the way he approached the PeaceMaker storyline, characters, and general style was absolutely worth it. The series was fun, and I was actually surprised by how entertaining it was for me. I think the use of a non-common type of humor is what made me enjoy the series so much. Kudos to this guy for creating it!

The performance from John Cena as PeaceMaker was totally memorable, it is even my favorite performance I have ever seen from this actor. He totally nailed this character and on his own was capable of providing high-quality humor throughout the entire 8 episodes of this season.

He carries the entire show and makes you wonder what crazy thing will happen next. I think his dialogues were purposely written as if he was a teenager to make everything funnier even though he is a man in his 40s or 50s, but the good thing is the formula worked and the series was both funny and entertaining.

PeaceMaker's personality, on the other hand, allows for many funny dialogues to take place. He is s bit dumb and he just doesn't realize that he can be a bit unsubtle to most people, but since he is s good guy he ends up appearing almost a bit innocent and naive when it comes to social interactions. In a way, he is just too pure and maybe even uncorrupted despite having the crazy job that he does.

His lack of understanding of social cues included in people's tones when talking also allows for many comedy scenes using PeaceMaker's dumbness as the theme of those moments.

That will also be a big reason why he gets into so many troubles. He is unable to prevent this and most times he will have to punch his way out of many complications, some of them were a bit silly though, to be honest.

Talking about his job, we will see many examples of PeaceMaker's "purity" when it comes to his principles and values. Even though he must be used to kill people, he still tries to not do immoral things. Knowing the type of dad he has, this must be a bit surprising but is nonetheless true.

I first thought PeaceMaker's dad was going to be a very irrelevant character, but it turned out to be someone with a lot of potential of influencing the story big time. This character is not only super powerful but he also loves to offend pretty much everyone around him.

Debo decir que el riesgo creativo que asumió en la forma en que abordó la historia, los personajes y el estilo general de PeaceMaker valió la pena. La serie fue divertida, y de hecho me sorprendió lo entretenida que fue para mí. Creo que el uso de un tipo de humor poco común es lo que me hizo disfrutar tanto de la serie. De verdad que hay que felicitar a este hombre por lo que hizo con PeaceMaker.

La actuación de John Cena como PeaceMaker fue totalmente memorable, es incluso mi actuación favorita que he visto de este actor. Encajó por completo con este personaje y por sí solo fue capaz de proporcionar humor de alta calidad a lo largo de los 8 episodios completos de esta temporada.

Él lleva el peso de todo el espectáculo y te hace preguntarte qué cosa loca sucederá a continuación. Creo que sus diálogos fueron escritos a propósito como si fuera un adolescente para hacer todo más divertido a pesar de que es un hombre de 40 o 50 años, pero lo bueno es que la fórmula funcionó y la serie fue divertida y entretenida.

La personalidad de PeaceMaker, por otro lado, permite que tengan lugar muchos diálogos divertidos. Es un poco tonto y simplemente no se da cuenta de que puede ser poco sutil para la mayoría de las personas, pero como es un buen tipo, termina pareciendo algo inocente e ingenuo cuando se trata de interacciones sociales. En cierto modo, es demasiado puro y tal vez incluso incorrupto a pesar de tener el trabajo loco que hace.

Su falta de comprensión de las señales sociales incluidas en el tono de las personas al hablar también permite muchas escenas de comedia que aprovechan lo tonto de PeaceMaker como el tema para hacer reir.

Esa también será una gran razón por la que se mete en tantos problemas. No puede evitar esto y la mayoría de las veces tendrá que salir de muchas complicaciones, aunque algunas de ellas fueron un poco tontas, para ser honesto.

Hablando de su trabajo, veremos muchos ejemplos de la "pureza" de PeaceMaker en lo que respecta a sus principios y valores. A pesar de que está acostumbrado a matar gente, todavía trata de no hacer cosas inmorales. Sabiendo el tipo de padre que tiene, esto debe ser un poco sorprendente, pero no obstante es cierto.

Primero pensé que el padre de PeaceMaker iba a ser un personaje muy irrelevante, pero resultó ser alguien con mucho potencial para influir en la historia a lo grande. Este personaje no solo es súper poderoso, sino que también le encanta ofender a casi todos los que lo rodean.

The series doesn't take itself very seriously and this can be confirmed just by seeing the intro, which I ended up loving and can be catchy as hell. If I was a kid I will most likely learn and copy the dance they show in the intro.

I usually don't like to see this type of silliness in the films or series that I watch, but PeaceMaker has something that made everything click and the final result was super enjoyable for me. I think it was a good decision for the creative team behind the series to allow for silliness to take over because this allowed them to experiment, to try to develop new things, and the result was quite good and different in my opinion.

I really didn't care about what happened to the characters, I was just waiting for the many opportunities to include black or politically incorrect comedy and have fun with it. This type of comedy is so absent in the industry that it can feel like a breath of fresh air to enjoy it from time to time.

The series has a bit of gore but it is not its main focus, is just that there is so much violence that having mutilated and destroyed bodies are retry much inevitable.

There are also new beings that I have never seen before in this universe, or at least not that I remember, and it was kind of cool to see these new creations, although I would have loved to see more info about them I would let this pass because not even PeaceMaker knew about them so as viewers, it is ok if we don't know either.

The story eventually begins to cover the nature of the threat PeaceMaker and his team has to face, and it was actually a bigger deal than what I originally thought. I would just say there is a massive conspiracy going on, and almost no one is paying attention to this world-changing threat. But no worries, because PeaceMaker is always there to save the day.

Final thoughts

If you are a person who is easy to get his/her feelings hurt then this series might not be for you. You will find jokes about race, political ideologies, and many more topics that are usually considered sensitive for many people.

On the other hand, if you enjoy this type of humor, then PeaceMaker will be an absolute blast for you. It might not be as awesome as The Boys, but it surely comes close to how enjoyable it can be. I mean, even the silly intro is funny, an amazing job by anyone involved.

La serie no se toma muy en serio a sí misma y esto se puede confirmar con solo ver la introducción, que me terminó encantando y puede ser muy pegadiza. Si fuera un niño, lo más probable es que me pusiese a aprender y copiar el baile que muestran en la introducción. Es buenísimo.

Por lo general, no me gusta ver este tipo de tonterías en las películas o series que veo, pero PeaceMaker tiene algo que hizo que todo encajara y el resultado final fue súper disfrutable para mí. Creo que fue una buena decisión para el equipo creativo detrás de la serie permitir que las tonterías tomaran el control porque esto les permitió experimentar, tratar de desarrollar cosas nuevas, y el resultado fue bastante bueno y diferente en mi opinión.

Realmente no me importaba lo que sucedía con los personajes, solo esperaba las muchas oportunidades para incluir comedia negra o políticamente incorrecta y divertirme con ella. Este tipo de comedia está tan ausente en la industria que puede parecer un soplo de aire fresco para disfrutarla de vez en cuando.

La serie tiene un poco de gore pero no es su enfoque principal, es solo que hay tanta violencia que tener cuerpos mutilados y destruidos es inevitable.

También hay nuevos seres que nunca antes había visto en este universo, o al menos no que yo recuerde, y fue genial ver estas nuevas creaciones, aunque me hubiera encantado ver más información sobre ellos, pero esto lo dejo pasar porque ni siquiera PeaceMaker sabía sobre ellos al comienzo, así que como espectadores, está bien si nosotros tampoco sabemos nada.

La historia finalmente comienza a cubrir la naturaleza de la amenaza que PeaceMaker y su equipo deben enfrentar, y en realidad fue un problema mayor de lo que pensé originalmente. Solo diría que está ocurriendo una conspiración masiva, y casi nadie está prestando atención a esta amenaza que puede cambiar el mundo. Pero no shay que preocuparse, porque PeaceMaker siempre está ahí para salvar el día.

Reflexiones finales

Si eres una persona a la que le resulta fácil herir sus sentimientos, es posible que esta serie no sea para ti. Encontrarás chistes sobre raza, ideologías políticas y muchos temas más que suelen ser considerados delicados para muchas personas.

Por otro lado, si te gusta este tipo de humor, PeaceMaker será una maravilla. Puede que no sea tan increíble como The Boys, pero seguramente se acerca a lo disfrutable que puede ser. Quiero decir, incluso la introducción tonta es divertida, un trabajo increíble por parte de todos los involucrados.
