Hive vs Ethereum

They say that when you want to improve, you should compare yourself with the greats; others say that comparisons are absurd. Professionally, comparisons are called benchmarking, but the only certain thing is that there is no greater truth than reality. In my previous post about an event from the Bitcoin Club (Link), it was mentioned that each blockchain has its particular objective—Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc. The truth is, more than just objectives, these are the reasons they were created, and in that world, Ethereum was launched in 2015 with the aim of being a network for decentralized application creators. Very nice and all, but would you really build on Ethereum? The reality is that Ethereum, as such, has become the mother of other solutions but hasn't become a healthy alternative for what it initially wanted to achieve. For example, to move 50 USDT (a stablecoin) on Ethereum, it cost me almost $3 in Ether (Ethereum’s cryptocurrency), and even if the price had been $2 in Ether, it would still be quite high. Therefore, developing on Ethereum as it stands isn’t a good alternative. Proof of this is the rise of scalable alternatives like Polygon and Optimism, where the gas fees are much lower and transactions are more affordable. In other words, Ethereum itself is not a scalable solution for building, but it could become one through other solutions built on its network.

That’s why, after some reflection, I realized that Hive is what Ethereum always wanted to be. This led me to the conclusion shown in the following comparative chart:

As we can see, there are both advantages and disadvantages to Hive (because not everything is perfect) that we will analyze below:

1. Transaction Speed: Hive is known for its high transaction speed, typically under three seconds. This is significantly faster than Ethereum, which can take several minutes depending on network congestion.

2. Transaction Cost: Hive offers free transactions for regular users, making it an attractive option for small transactions and microtransactions. In comparison, Ethereum has gas fees that can be quite high during times of high demand.

3. Scalability: Hive was designed to be scalable from the start, allowing it to handle a large volume of transactions without sacrificing efficiency. This is an advantage compared to the scalability issues Ethereum has faced, though Ethereum is working on this with updates like Ethereum 2.0.

4. Governance Model: Hive has a decentralized governance model where users have greater influence through delegated voting power, enabling more participatory decision-making.

5. Ecosystem: Hive has a smaller ecosystem compared to Ethereum, which boasts thousands of decentralized applications (dApps), smart contracts, and a wide range of ERC-20 tokens.

6. Adoption: Ethereum is one of the most widely adopted blockchains globally, while Hive has a smaller community, which may limit development and collaboration opportunities.

7. Functionalities: While Hive is highly efficient for certain applications, such as social networks and content, it doesn't offer the same flexibility as Ethereum for creating complex decentralized applications due to its focus on fast transactions and a simpler ecosystem.

8. Liquidity: Ethereum is the second most valuable cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, and most exchanges and wallets support Ethereum-based tokens, providing high liquidity.

Conclusion: If we look at the comparison chart, we realize that Hive's negative points lie in its exposure, as this could easily lead to a decisive victory for Hive over Ethereum. However, there are still tasks to be done, and we must continue building and spreading the word.

Dicen que cuando quieres mejorar debes compararte con lo grandes, otros dicen que las comparaciones son absurdas, profesionalmente a las comparaciones se les llama: Benchmarketing, pero lo único cierto es que no hay mayor verdad que la realidad. En mi post anterior de un evento del club del bitcoin (Link) se habló que cada blockchain tiene su objetivo en particular, Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc. Valgan verdades mas que un objetivo son las razones para las cuales fueron creadas y en ese mundo Ethereum se lanzaba en el 2015 con el objetivo de ser una red para creadores de aplicaciones descentralizadas, muy bonito y todo pero ¿Tú construirías en Ethereum? realmente Ethereum como tal se ha convertido en la madre de otras soluciones pero no se convirtió en una alternativa saludable para lo que tanto quería, para mover 50 USDT(stablecoin) en Ethereum me costo casi 3$ en ether( criptomoneda de Ethereum) y suponiendo que el precio hubiese sido 2$ en ether aun así es un precio muy elevado, por lo cual desarrollar en Ethereum como tal no es una buena alternativa, prueba de ello es que nacieron alternativas escalables como Polygon y Optimism donde el gas cuesta mucho menos y no cuesta tanto hacer transacciones, es decir Ethereum como tal no es una solución escalable para construir pero si puede llegar a serlo mediante otras soluciones construidas en su red.

Es por eso que meditando me di cuenta que Hive es lo que Ethereum siempre quiso ser, por eso llegue a la conclusión con un cuadro comparativo:

Como podemos observar tenemos puntos a favor de Hive y puntos en contra ( porque no todo es color de rosa) que vamos a analizar a continuación:

1. Velocidad de Transacción: Hive es conocido por su alta velocidad de transacción, generalmente en menos de tres segundos. Esto es significativamente más rápido que Ethereum, que puede tardar varios minutos dependiendo de la congestión de la red.

2. Costo de Transacción: Hive tiene transacciones gratuitas para los usuarios comunes, lo que lo convierte en una opción atractiva para pequeñas transacciones y microtransacciones. En comparación, Ethereum tiene tarifas de gas que pueden ser bastante elevadas en tiempos de alta demanda.

3. Escalabilidad: Hive fue diseñado para ser escalable desde el principio, permitiendo que maneje un gran volumen de transacciones sin sacrificar la eficiencia. Esto es una ventaja en comparación con los problemas de escalabilidad que Ethereum ha enfrentado, aunque Ethereum está trabajando en esto con actualizaciones como Ethereum 2.0.

4. Modelo de Gobernanza: Hive tiene un modelo de gobernanza descentralizado donde los usuarios tienen una mayor influencia a través de la delegación de poder de voto, lo que permite una toma de decisiones más participativa.

5. Ecosistema: Hive tiene un ecosistema pequeño en comparación con Ethereum, que cuenta con miles de aplicaciones descentralizadas (dApps), contratos inteligentes y una amplia gama de tokens ERC-20.

6. Adopción: Ethereum es una de las blockchains más adoptadas globalmente, mientras que Hive tiene una comunidad más reducida, lo que puede limitar las oportunidades de desarrollo y colaboración.

7. Funcionalidades: Aunque Hive es muy eficiente para ciertas aplicaciones, como redes sociales y contenidos, no tiene la misma flexibilidad que Ethereum para crear aplicaciones descentralizadas complejas debido a su enfoque en transacciones rápidas y un ecosistema más sencillo.

8. Liquidez: Ethereum es la segunda criptomoneda más valiosa después de Bitcoin, y la mayoría de los intercambios y carteras soportan tokens basados en Ethereum, lo que proporciona una alta liquidez.

Conclusión: Si observamos el cuadro comparativo nos damos cuenta que los puntos negativos de Hive radican en difusión ya que así podríamos estar hablando tranquilamente de una victoria rotunda de Hive sobre Ethereum, pero queda tareas pendientes y debemos seguir construyendo, debemos seguir difundiendo.
