When the planets align, you will see it with your naked eyes to the extent that there are enough planets that are close enough to us. So, 2 of the smallest and most farthest away planets may be invisible. But if some of the closer and more larger planets including Jupiter are clustered together and if it's close enough and bright enough and clear enough in the sky, then people should be able to see it or you better find a telescope. So, did the wise men have special equipment for studying stars? Some people believe the wise men spent time studying stars and that that is the reason they noticed a star appearing that was allegedly or apparently new.
