Robotic surgery is becoming more popular in NHS hospitals. These high-tech machines help doctors do operations with small cuts instead of big ones. This means people heal faster, lose less blood, have smaller scars, and can often go home the same day.
In 2024, more than 70,000 robotic surgeries were done. That’s twice as many as in 2022. These machines are now used for many kinds of operations, such as cancer treatment, bone and joint surgeries, and women’s health.
However, the robots are very expensive. They can cost up to £1.5 million, and doctors need special training to use them. Not all hospitals have access to them yet.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who had robotic surgery for cancer, supports bringing this technology to more NHS hospitals. He believes it will help modernize healthcare and reduce waiting times.
