Sex offender sentenced to corporal punishment in Louisiana

On 1 March, 34 year old Ryan Clark of Kentwood, LA pleaded guilty to a rape of a minor under 13 years old. This is the second sex offense he has been prosecuted for. His sentence this time includes 35 years behind bars and a chemical castration prior to release. The chemical castration consists of an injection (or a series of injections) that drive down a man's testosterone levels to almost zero. That is expected to annul his sex drive.

Not that I have all that much sympathy for Mr Clark if he did indeed do what he had pleaded guilty to, but I still find measures like this a bit questionable Same for corporal punishment in general. I oppose death penalty. As for chemical castration - well, I'd be inclined to ask, how effective is it? Does it truly annihilate one's ex drive? Does it do the same o one's possible sadistic proclivities?

At any rate, this particular measure seems a little controversial. In practice, I wonder if habitual sex offenders that are deemed incorrigible should just receive some variant of a life sentence. That may be a more productive approach, in terms of actual public safety.
