How come you’re not making a backup? That’s stupid…
Before you get to say that, let me explain.
Yesterday, I just shot some pictures and I was about to post-process my pictures and videos. The thing is, I got distracted before I even managed to upload them to Canva or make a backup to my laptop. Then, I went downstairs to get some food and got back upstairs after an hour to work on it but suddenly, I got a notification my files were corrupted and it was not readable.
My heart sank at that moment because some pictures were pretty cool and I haven’t admired them. There were also some files that I needed which haven’t been post-processed too. So, I panicked a little but also thought about ways to recover the lost files.
There are a few things I did that might be useful if you’re experiencing similar things
Try to stick the memory card/SD card into another device
Somehow that works with mine. I tried it on my phone and some files showed up except they were on a different file extension. All of them turned into .chk files and even created found.000 files.
At that point, safe to say running a chkdsk isn’t gonna help it. So the next step is finding a software recovery that actually works.
EaseUS vs Recuva
You can bet on those two but here’s what I did without spending any money on this data recovery software. First you can install easeUS to recognize the missing files and data. These diagnoses are on their free version. So, make good use of it.
Next, download Recuva, a freemium software owned by Piriform. You can only hope they don't’ come with malware or hidden ransomware 😼. I don’t think I have found anything as easy to use as them. However, I was desperate and this is such a bad cybersecurity practice but YOLO, I need my pictures!!
I ended up recovering only some of them because some are corrupted and can’t be recovered. Some of them also came out looking like this.
After that incident, it was a good reminder to constantly and immediately make back up. Otherwise, some files are gone and can’t be recovered. I might also need a new SD card since that one has been with me for over 4 years now. If you’re experiencing something similar like mine, don’t panic and try to troubleshoot it before you completely format the memory card.
