Feathered Friday - The Usual Suspects

Here are a few of the usual suspects from last year for this #featheredfriday by @melinda010100

The house sparrows are all over the place here, though they are common if you take enough photos of them you can catch some interesting action. Perhaps a good new year's resolution for me will be to give them a bit more attention on my camera.

Here's the moody artistic sparrow contemplating deep philosophical thoughts, like how to fill a gutter just right so that the rain water will stop from flowing and keep the nest dry...

If there's one thing more common than sparrows around here its the Canadian geese. They are all quite tame and I can just walk up and get funny looking shots like this.

The mallards are second most common. They are always mucking about in the algae areas looking for snails. I wonder how bad the nematodes are in this lake... Fortunately swimming is not allowed here as its technically a reservoir and not a lake that's loaded full of algae.

Here's a usual sight that always has good poses. These guys are brazen and will try and attack you so its easy to just stand there and anger them until they land for a photo.

The female redwings are less aggressive until they have a baby nearby then they will attack. The males always attack no matter if there are babies around or not.

This past year was good for sighting the black crowned night heron. I think it might have just been the same one that kept visiting the lake as it is full of tiny bluegill to eat.

Last year was good for raptor sightings. I even got to see some baby redtails that just emerged from their nests above the lacrosse field. They sat on the net all day learning how to fly.

Now for a rare sighting of a barred owl in the daytime. Sadly this one was being really shy and I could only get a glimpse of it behind the leaves. They are mostly out in the dark and I rarely see them when there is enough light out for a photo.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
