Hidden Bird Art at the cemetary

I suggest you to take a walk with me to the old cemetery. I have already done two posts about the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent's necropol at St.Petersburg; this is an interesting place, I like to walk here with a camera. Until 1917 it was the most expensive and fashionable cemetary of St.Petersburg; the empire's elite were buried here, which makes this place interesting to visit. After 1917, the cemetery was looted and almost erased by 80% ... today we can see just the pitiful remains. I am still unable to write a detailed story about this place.

Предлагаю прогуляться вместе со мной на старое кладбище. Я уже сделал раньше два поста про Воскресенский Новодевичий монастырь в Санкт-Петербурге. Это интересное место, я люблю гулять здесь с фотоаппаратом. До 1917 года оно было самым дорогим и престижным, здесь хоронили элиту империи, что и делает это место интересным для посещения. После 1917 года кладбище было разграблено и фактически стерто на 80%... сегодня мы можем видеть жалкие остатки. Подробный рассказ про это место я все еще не в состоянии написать.

Many crypts and graves are vandalized and the names of those who are buried there are difficult to restore. I do not know whose crypt it is and who is buried here. (It is not difficult to find it: it is the fifth crypt on the right side of the Altar path). Why is this small chapel-crypt made of black basalt so remarkable? Little remains of the crypt; the remains of the ornament and images of angels are visible on the columns. From the cross that once crowned the chapel, only a crescent remains. But one architectural detail has survived the years gone by. This detail is easy to miss if you do not know about it in advance ... If you look inside and raise your head, under the dome you will see a beautiful mosaic - a dove against the background of a star.

Многие склепы и могилы вандализированы и имена тех, кто там похоронен, восстанавливаются с трудом. Я не знаю чей это склеп и кто здесь похоронен. (Найти его нетрудно: это пятый склеп по правой стороне Алтарной дорожки). Чем же так замечателен небольшой склеп-часовенка из черного базальта? От склепа мало что осталось, на колоннах видны остатки орнамента и изображения ангелов. От креста, который когда-то венчал часовню, остался только полумесяц. Но одна архитектурная деталь пережила прошедшие годы. Эту деталь легко пропустить, если ты не знаешь заранее о ней... Если заглянуть внутрь и поднять голову, под куполом вы увидите красивую мозаику – голубя на фоне звезды.

Cemetery symbolics is a great subject for a separate post (or even a series of posts! The Jewish cemeteries taken alone worth a lot...). Let me remind you that the dove in Orthodoxy is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. (That is why, as I recently learned from a book, there were many pigeons in the city: they were well-fed by god-fearing residents of the city, religious old women who made up a significant percentage of the city's population. Why there are so many pigeons around now is an open question, without an answer).

Кладбищенская символика - тема для отдельного поста (или даже серии! Чего стоят одни еврейские кладбища...). Напомню, что голубь в православии -- это символ Святого духа. (Именно поэтому, как я узнал недавно, в городе было много голубей: их подкармливали богобоязненные религиозные старушки, к-е составляли большой % населения. После революции это изменилось, и голубей стало меньше... почему их опять так много - открытый вопрос).

Finding this architectural detail was a big surprise, even a shock. On the contrary to all the rest decay around, this little bird - hidden in a place where it is really difficult to reach for vandals - is worth a lot, and reminds of the days when the necropolis was on its peak, of how luxurious and beautiful it was 100 years ago, in the previous life.

Найти эту архитектурную деталь было большим сюрпризом, и даже шоком. На фоне остального развала, эта маленькая птичка -- упрятанная в таком месте, куда рукам вандалов действительно трудно добраться -- дорогого стоит, и напоминает о прежних днях некрополя, о том как роскошно и красиво тут было когда-то.
