Kicking Carpet!

Kicking Carpet

It's always a pleasant surprise when a post of mine gets a lot of juicy upvotes. My focus here isn't money as Hive doesn't pay my bills, but it's often a good indicator that real people are reading my content.

The previous post is doing well in regards to upvotes, and there was more interaction as well as opposed to the last few months. It's like everyone was on holiday or something! Lol.

Work is slowly picking up, but it's still sporadic.
Right now I am doing the setting up for the Caravan and Camping Show at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

My job is a fairly simple one, in that all I have to do is make sure the carpet tiles are lined up in such a way that the seams are invisible.

This is achieved by "kicking carpet" back into place when various vehicles, caravans, trailers and campers go too fast and have to do sharp turns on the carpet.

The other part of the job is mostly walking around the huge pavillion checking to see if everything is adheres to occupational health and safety guidelines.

It's a strange mixture of being both active and inactive, attentive while not interfering with the clients or their set ups.

Some of the clients are extremely wealthy.

This client is a spoilt one

Sometimes there needs to be some polite diplomacy and negotiation when things don't go to plan.

Displaced tile under a vehicle

Generally the clients know that a standard needs to be maintained and will do the right thing and either move their vehicles or will kick the carpet into place.

The Caravan and Camping Show in Adelaide is the biggest in the country, and it goes for 5 days.

Caravans and camper vehicles are frightfully expensive. From what I saw they ranged from AU$55,000 to well over AU$100,000.

However, for that cost you get all of the modern conveniences you'd expect in a portable home. Solar panels and tanks containing natural gas are standard.

There was a form of camping gear that was a cross between a tent / shelter with stable base that fit into the tray section of what we call a "ute" (short for utility vehicle) or what Americans call a "pick up truck".

This "more than a tent" was massive, had a sturdy metal base, and needed to be climbed into via a ladder.
It was designed to be really far off of the ground, like if you were on a safari or something.

The top section had a canvas cloth section that came out to provide verandah style shelter and had legs that reached the ground for support.

It turns your vehicle into a complete camping location.

The rest of the show had various other technology and gadets for sale, like torches, portable solar panels, portable cots, inflatable mattresses and all of the various caravan supplies sold separately.

I'm supposed to be working after the event on Monday and Tuesday as part of the clean up, when all of the caravans and campers leave.

In the end, the carpets will be back in place and all will be right with the world.

Clear carpet

As a sidenote, I have now been employed by a company that does corporate events.
I get to dress up, essentially stand around and do nothing in the same location but get more shifts.

Sweet.

Thank you for reading.

Shaidon.
