34 Persons participated in the first SpendHBD workshop in Nigeria

What an amazing way to kick-off the SpendHBD project in my city Aba, Nigeria. The response from Hive users that live here was encouraging. Of course, we all have been together as a group for close to 2 years now on Hive. So it was not too difficult to bring them together. Including newbies that signed up during the event, there were a total of 35 persons that were present for the workshop.

Kicking off the Workshop

I did the presentation, starting with a brief introduction to the Hive blockchain. This was important especially for the new friends in our midst. Then quickly, we moved into describing what the SpendHBD program was all about. I took time to explain the massive value that this project brings to business owner and shoppers alike. It was an exhaustive session that includes a question and answer part. I made sure that all in attendance understood what the project aims to achieve - creating a parallel money economy built around HBD.

After about 40 minutes of head knowledge presentation, it was time to sign up the newbies. Then old members present assisted them to set up their profiles. The video included above is the section where newbies are being shown how to quickly sign up an account. Finally they downloaded Hive Keychain and imported their accounts.

The first practical session involves teaching everyone how to scan QR codes generated by shop-owners. I utilized the slide presentation to that effect, explaining where to touch to open the Keychain QR scanner. It was not difficult for those in attendance to learn it. Each person was allowed to scan the QR code from a demo transaction I created. Once they mastered it, we moved over to the listed shops where we did the shopping.

At the shopping plaza

The two whitelisted shops were we did the shopping are Grand Options and Romey Everyday Super market. Once we got to their shops, we arranged to enter in sets of 5 since they are not big supermarkets. The attendants where on hand to generate receipts for each $4 purchases.

There was network challenge too. A few times, the ISP did not give strong signals and it made the transactions take a little longer to complete. Also a few of the devices did not work well with distraitor. One device particularly shutdown the distraitor app immediately a picture was taken. But overall, it was a successful event and the participants where excited with the service. Some went on to shop more after the initial transaction, such was the extent of their happiness.

Moving forward

The shopping will continue as we all were happy to enjoy the discounts. I have listed only 5 shops, but there are thousands of businesses in my city. Aba is a commercial city and home to many large markets including Ariaria International Market. So I will get many others to enlist as local guides here.

Also, I will organize weekly group shopping events in full SpendHBD branding. This will create more value to the project as businesses witness the number of cutomers we can bring during group events. Other things are being planned by me to make this project a success in my city Aba and elsewhere.

I thank the SpendHBD team for their enormous support in making this first workshop a success. I will host weekly workshops and make reports of it every Monday.
