The pitiful cases of insecurity that face road users in Nigeria.

I've been to so many places in this country and I'm one of those that attach sentimental value to different parts of Nigeria. Until recently, whenever I get an opportunity to travel to any part of Nigeria, I often embark on the journey with a surge of anticipation.

To be fair, who wouldn't be excited about travelling?

The joy of being in a new place, meeting new people, learning about the unique things about them and exploring the fascinating things about the city (or village) gives me a feel-good attitude regardless of the monetary cost.

I can still recall how much I enjoyed travelling from Enugu to Onitsha during my uni days. There is a part of Onitsha that is so beautiful and sought after and I'm one of those that regularly visited the place. I even imagined building houses there.

Despite all the love I have for travelling and exploring different parts of this country, the reality facing travellers in recent times is the type that cannot be overlooked by any road user. The cases of insecurity that come face-to-face with road users are fairly pitiful.

People set out on a journey, but don't get to their decision. We get loads of reports about these. Kidnapping has been on the increase. Highway robbery is also on the rise. As if that's not enough, our men in uniform also run around like a kid on sugar, looking for who to oppress.

With the festive season around the corner, people are beginning to wonder how they will go about their usual travels without losing their lives or properties.

To put this into perspective; there is also the issue of overwhelming traffic, the cost of petrol and other superficial issues which inconvenience travellers. But, that will be a topic for some other day. Insecurity is at the top of the list.
