WHAT IS DEPRESSION

Depression as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary is a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies. So hopefully we now know what depression is an can check ourselves for symptoms.

CAUSES OF DEPRESSION

Well they're many causes of depression but I'd like to highlight one which I think is the major cause, that is UNHEALTHY COMPARISON. We see this affecting a large percentage of children, teenagers and even adults in our world today. Every human being was created different and that's what makes us unique, according to research, no two fingerprints are even the same. So we were made differently and that's what makes us unique. When you start to compare yourself with someone else you're unknowingly training your mind to see only the "bad side" of you. Here is what the bible has to say about comparison in 2Cor.10.12 Oh, don't worry; I wouldn't dare say that I am as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, and measuring themselves by themselves. What foolishness! (NLT). Appreciate yourself, you are beautiful even with that stretch mark. You're not too fat neither too thin. You're perfect the way you are. You are loved. You are light. Think positively of yourself and train your mind to do the same. You'd be fine.

HOW TO OVERCOME DEPRESSION

1) NEVER STAY IN ISOLATION
This is a very common feeling amongst people living in depression, there's this urge to always be alone. Please avoid it as much as you can. Staying alone makes room for your mind to be filled with so much unhealthy or suicidal thoughts. Fight the urge to stay in isolation, go out, engage with friends and family. This would help greatly.

DO THINGS THAT YOU DERIVE OR ONCE DERIVED JOY FROM
When depressed, a lot of things may not seem fun to you any longer as your mind has been polluted, so when you see something that you're happy engaging in please don't withhold back. Do things that make you happy and if you haven't found any, do things that once made you happy. More often than not you'd find joy doing then eventually. Go for anything that catches your interest as long as it's healthy and moral.

SPEAK UP(THERAPIST OR FRIEND)
There's this narrative that seems to play out amongst people living with depression, making them believe that people don't care. IT IS A LIE!!!. Speak up, talk to a family member, a friend or better still, see a therapist. Don't keep all the feelings to yourself. Man was not created to exist as a lone entity. A problem shared is one half solved.

AVOID SELF-CRITICISM
Never criticise yourself, you're doing more damage to your self esteem than you'd ever know. Always maintain a positive mindset of yourself. Every human has an inner critical voice which they must conquer else it conquers them. People may criticise you it's normal, but when you become your own critic then something urgently needs to be done.

Disclaimer: Like I said earlier, this is not medical advice. You're advised to see your medical doctor if need applies. Thanks
