Have you ever stood in front of mirror, and see yourself smiling as you observed how beautiful or handsome you were created? You admired your dimples, your finelines, your gaped tooth, your curvy shape, your finger and toe nails, and even your long hair? If so, you are self conscious.
Have you also attended an event, you noticed that people are looking at you, out of anxiety, you asked someone about your looks or brought out a mirror from your purse to see your face? If yes is you answer, then you are self conscious. Self consciousness is inherent on humans. Human have the need to be admired, praised and not scorned, As a result, we become conscious of ourselves. Before we proceed, let's discuss the word 'self-consciousness'.

Self consciousness is described as our natural habit to reflect on ourselves; our thoughts, our emotions, our looks, and our abilities . The extent to which we focus on our selves and reflect on these qualities describes our level of self consciousness. Self consciousness is divided into two, namely private self consciousness and public self consciousness.
A private self conscious person habitually engages in self reflection. Thinking about his thoughts, feelings, motives, physical responses, past,actions and motivations. While in public he focuses on how others are looking at him. For example, a public self conscious person is mindful of his behavior as perceived by others. He is also aware of how he physically looks to others. It is observed that people with public self consciousness tend to use makeup and fashion to affect how they are seen by others.

Types of self consciousness: positive and negative self consciousness.
Positive self consciousness goes with positive emotions like taking pride in accomplishment, enjoying social functions, taking responsibility and apologizing for offenses. On the hand being negative self conscious also goes with negative feelings like having low esteem, blaming others for a predicament, jealousy, anger, experiencing nervousness, depression,and anxiety.

Pride motivates us to work harder for more accomplishments
Self-consciousness helps is to acknowledge how we align in the society
Considering the guilt and shame that comes with violating social rule helps is to be more responsible

DISADVANTAGES OF BEING SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS

It hinders one from taking certain test that would expose one's lifestyle
It can lead to isolation
It can cause social discomfort and anxiety
It can jealousy

HOW TO GET RID OF NEGATIVE SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS

Always remember your accomplishments or write them down
Keep your promises
Admit your mistakes and make amendments
Avoid actions that trigger negative emotions like nagging, gossiping
Always engage in your hubbies
Take a deep breath and be kind to yourself when reflecting on past actions that trigger negative thoughts .
