Shards are the most important item in the game for anybody who owns land and has buildings. Yet, for a long time I did not understand how they worked or why they were so valuable.
The reason shards matter so much is they enable you to upgrade your buildings.
By upgrading your buildings to higher levels you are able to farm resources more quickly. Each upgrade reduces the amount of time that it will take to create a new resource. Even better, some upgrades add new tasks and recipes to buildings. These can be major sources of new value.
Solar Panels
One example that I show in the video is a common solar panel. At level one, the solar panel can only charge a single power cell at a time.
If you upgrade the common solar panel to level three, which requires burning five common solar panel shards, it is then able to charge two solar panels in a single action. This doubles the efficiency of the solar panel.
Considering that common solar panel shards go for anywhere from 10-20 dusk in the marketplace, this is a pretty great deal. If you're going to use the solar panel for years to come, that added value will eventually be worth it.
