Welcome to all admirers of the insect world
Greetings and blessings to all my dear readers, this time, especially those who love the wonderful world of insects and who make life in this great community of #fascinatinginsects. As you can see today, I come to share with you a selection of images of a small black wasp that I came across, while observing some plants of Celosia Argéntea or Lake Spinach.
Mistakenly, these little bugs are one of the most undervalued of the insect kingdom, despite the important work they do in controlling many of the pests that affect humans. When we encounter them, we always look at them with fear and immediately think of a swarm of wasps ready to attack us. But nothing could be further from the truth, in most cases this assumption is a mistake, since most of the wasp species are solitary and harmless insects, at least for us humans.
Although today I show you in my images a wasp whose color is black, it is necessary to clarify that its range of colors goes from yellow to brown, however, we can also find them in metallic colors such as blue and green, even reaching bright red. They belong to the large order of the Hymenoptera, one of the largest in the insect world, which also includes ants and bees. Their size is very varied, ranging from the tiniest, called the Fairy Wasp, which measures about 0.2 millimeters, to those of average size ranging from 1 to 1.5 cm, up to the largest species, the Giant Asian Hornet or Vespamandarinia, which can measure up to 5 cm.
After reading the previous paragraph, it is reasonable to ask, how can I tell the difference between a wasp and a bee? If we talk in terms of colors, it would be very difficult. But, believe it or not, it is simple, if you look closely, wasps, unlike bees, have something very similar to a waist called petiole that separates the abdomen from the thorax, in addition, their lower abdomen has a pointed shape.
On the other hand, in terms of their social behavior, it is possible to state that wasps are divided into two subgroups, the first being the group of social wasps, which includes a small group of approximately one thousand species. On the other hand, the rest of the species, which represent the majority, belong to the second subgroup represented by the solitary wasps. Both subgroups, in spite of having different social behaviors, coincide in the fact that all of them build their unmistakable, corrugated nests. These nests are made of wood fiber, which they tear with their mandibles from the bark of the trees and then chew until they transform it into a kind of pulp.
And touching on the subject of their homes or nests, which, in some of the species that live together in colonies, can be very complex constructions. An anecdote came to my mind as a child, quite unpleasant, by the way, involving a small wasp. At that time, my parents' house where I grew up was under construction and I was playing around a place where there were some construction materials. It turns out that a small wasp, very similar to the one I am showing you today, had built its nest between the holes in one of the clay blocks and I approached to observe it. For some absurd reason, it crossed my mind that imitating the buzzing of that little insect was a good idea. Obviously, I caught its attention and it flew directly towards my nose, so I immediately tried to push it away and as a defensive response, naturally, it bit me.
In the anecdote I just told you, even though the wasp stung me, it never intended to attack me, it only defended itself. And in most of the cases where wasps attack humans or animals, it is a natural response to what they interpret as an attack. Contrary to the beliefs we all have, the reality is that they do not attack for no reason, even some species of wasps are appreciated.
This is because they are very beneficial to humans by helping to control some pests in agriculture and horticulture. Moreover, as a curious fact, practically every insect catalogued as a pest, turns out to be the perfect prey for some species of wasp, whether they want it as food or as a habitat to deposit their larvae. So, perhaps we should change our perspective on how we perceive wasps and start trying to live with them in harmony. Without forgetting, of course, to respect their space, because of one thing we must be sure, if we bother them, we will surely get one or more stings.
Well, the time has come to say goodbye, although I know that I have fallen short of everything that can be said about wasps, since they are really interesting insects. But, I do not want to extend too much, so, I will leave it for another occasion, trusting that the information that I share with you today will be to your liking. Moreover, it will help you to understand a little better and to value wasps as an essential part of our ecosystem. It only remains for me to send you many blessings and my best wishes for you and your loved ones, see you next time!
