Una introducción necesaria
Si buscamos el concepto de Geología vemos que es la ciencia que se encarga del estudio, composición y desarrollo de la tierra. Por tal razón, veremos que esta ciencia juega un papel esencial en nuestro desarrollo integral, de ahí que su creación jugó un papel importante en el objetivo de desarrollar las Ciencias de la Tierra.
Con esta publicación, quien escribe que, es el director de Gestión del Conocimiento de dicho centro, quiere rendir un merecido homenaje a todos sus y trabajadores, desde los fundadores hasta los que se encuentran hoy con nosotros.
Sirva también, como tributo a los que ya no están, pero que tanto hicieron por llevar al máximo posible el desarrollo de estas ciencias.
Objetivos, misiones e importancia
Varios son los objetivos y misiones de nuestro instituto, pero, en aras de evitar hacer tan técnica la publicación diré que este es el centro que en Cuba se encarga de Generar, organizar y difundir información geológica; coordinar las acciones de investigación de la actividad geológica, desarrolla investigaciones en las diferentes ramas de la Geología como Búsqueda de Recursos Minerales, Cartografía Geológica, Geología Marina, Materiales de la Construcción, Paleontología, Análisis Petrográficos, Patrimonio Geológico, Riesgos Geológicos, Geología Regional, Medio Ambiente, entre otras.
De ahí que, nuestro instituto juegue un papel esencial en el desarrollo económico del país porque su área de influencia abarca a todos los sectores del país y los renglones de la economía que abarca tienen que ver con nuestras investigaciones.
En estos momentos las áreas de investigación más importantes son: Yacimientos Minerales, Geofísica, Geología Ambiental, Geoprocesamiento, Geología Regional, Paleontología, Cartografía y Gestión del Conocimiento Geológico.
Eventos científicos
Numerosos son los eventos científicos que organiza nuestra institución y también son variados en los que participa. Estos eventos y talleres en los que participan nuestros investigadores y especialistas tienen carácter nacional e internacional. Dentro de los más importantes están:
•Convención de Ciencias de la Tierra
•Congreso Internacional de Geología
•Talleres Nacionales sobre Cartografía Geológica
•Taller sobre Comunicación y Marketing.
•Convención Internacional sobre Medio Ambiente
•Fórum de Ciencia y Técnica

•Feria Internacional del Libro.
•Participación en las Juntas de la Asociación Iberoamericana de Geología, de la que somos miembros activos.
De igual manera, es importante reconocer la gran cantidad de ingenieros, técnicos, especialistas, máseres y doctores que se han logrado formar y que contribuyen a mantener los altos indicadores de calidad que ostenta nuestro centro.

•Mapas de cuba (geológicos, tectónicos, de yacimientos minerales y geofísicos entre otros) a diferentes escalas (1:1000000, 1: 500000, 1:250 000, 1:100 000, 1: 50 000),
•Varias ediciones del Léxico Estratigráfico de Cuba,
•Múltiples libros, artículos, bases de datos, multimedias, etc. sobre la geología, los recursos minerales metálicos y no metálicos del país, los riesgos geológicos, etc.
•Nuestros investigadores participaron en la preparación del cosmonauta cubano Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.
•Cinco de nuestros investigadores han recibido el Premio Anual de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba
Actividades desarrolladas para celebrar este cumpleaños
Múltiples han sido las actividades de celebración de esta fecha, en la que se han conjugado actividades recreativas con nuestro objetivo fundamental que es la investigación. Entre otras, queremos señalar las siguientes:
•Actividades por Día de la Ciencia Cubana.
•Talleres de la Reserva Científica.
•Recibimiento a los nuevos ingenieros que se incorporaron al centro.
•Reconocimiento a investigadores destacados.
•Taller Científico por el 28 aniversario del Centro Nacional de Información Geológica.
•Eventos científicos, sobre diferentes proyectos de Investigación y Desarrollo que ejecuta el instituto.
Un comentario final
El desarrollo de las Ciencias de la Tierra del país sería imposible sin el aporte decisivo de los investigadores y trabajadores del Instituto de Geología y Paleontología que, también es el Servicio Geológico de Cuba.
Durante más de medio siglo nuestro centro ha acogido a las personalidades de las Geociencias más prominentes del país y ha tenido una contribución decisiva en el desarrollo socioeconómico de la sociedad. De igual manera, nuestros investigadores han contribuido al desarrollo de estas ciencias en América Latina, el Caribe y otras partes del mundo.

A necessary introduction
The Institute of Geology was born 57 years ago, as a scientific unit of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.

A final comment
The development of the country's Earth Sciences would be impossible without the decisive contribution of the researchers and workers of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, which is also the Geological Survey of Cuba.
For more than half a century our center has hosted the most prominent personalities of the Geosciences of the country and has had a decisive contribution in the socioeconomic development of society. Likewise, our researchers have contributed to the development of these sciences in Latin America, the Caribbean and other parts of the world.
