I was once told, "Why do you do these things?" "Why do you go on, if you don't get much out of it?" And there I realized how vain is the philosophy of life of all the people who, uninvited, question my judgment in devoting myself to what I love; of their amazing capacities devoted to misrepresenting six years of study-who are they kidding? Rather, a lifetime- because of how hard it is to live itself. When those six years and those decades more are my life, and at least I should say: what makes it more than good enough.
That's right: I chose the work of hope, of sleeplessness, and of smiles after pain. I strove for the simple goal of being a weapon to face death. And I smile at the Grim Reaper every day, in every battle, as I gasp at the effort it takes to try to beat him.
No soy mártir.
I am not a martyr. I am a battered human being, also weak, also in need. My weekend plan throughout these future years is already predetermined: A sleepless night, fighting so that it is not the last night of others. My vacation, after a university degree, goes unnoticed in a hospital; like those of many of my kind. Well, instead of going to the beach, I extend the years of life of those beings they call senior citizens.
No, no siempre me gusta despertar temprano y regresar tarde a casa.
No, I don't always like to wake up early and come home late. I love partying, and watching shows and movies all day, not worrying, and other things like everyone else; but the one I chose above all else involves giving of myself for others. There are days when that choice is hard, and when I don't feel good. But there are others when I see happy faces in my patients. And that always, always, makes up for the former. These are the reasons why, despite what many people think, every time I am asked about my job, I proudly say that I am a physician.
