¿Logran ver esos niños tras las persianas? Pues son todo un espectáculo, pero mejor no nos adelantemos. No hace mucho me preguntaron en mi trabajo si podía ayudar como fotógrafo en un evento creado para ayudar a más de 200 niños, suelen pedirme este tipo de ayudas para cosas políticas y mi respuesta siempre ha sido no, pero esta vez fue diferente.
La escuela a la que iríamos se dedica enteramente a niños que viven en ambientes familiares desestructurados, si no fuera por esta escuela esos niños no sabrían leer y escribir. Normalmente los niños en Cuba asisten a escuelas cercanas a donde viven, aquí no se da el caso, estos niños son recogidos cada mañana sin importar el municipio de donde sean para que asistan a las clases. De lo contrario nunca irían, los padres no suelen ocuparse de ellos en casi ningún sentido y voy a preferir no contar las historias de algunos profesores con los que pude hablar sobre lo poco que se ocupan los padres. Esto pasa por el rechazo que le hacen por alguna discapacidad o por el simple hecho de no interesarles su cuidado o educación, pero lo mejor es no rebuscar ahí pues existe en todas las sociedades del mundo con sus diferencias claro.
Mi respuesta a la pregunta fue de si, no podía ser otra. Veo mal hacer algo por ellos y colgarlo en redes sociales, pero pensé en usar la oportunidad que me ofrecían para conocer más sobre este tipo de escuelas. No se suele conocer de ello en la sociedad y de seguro que algo se podría hacer para ayudar. Todo el tiempo que estuve en la escuela me la pasé conociendo la situación y pensando maneras en la que mejorar la situación. Además, el evento consistiría en realizar actividades donde los niños se diviertan y eso siempre ayuda a distraer la mente de la realidad.
Fuimos alrededor de 10 personas de mi trabajo a la escuela junto a varios proyectos y negocios cubanos, apenas llegamos se comenzó a organizar todo. Antes de empezar hablaron con la directora del centro y la coordinadora para rematar los detalles de todo, luego de ello los profesores fueron trayendo a los alumnos al lobby de la escuela y se organizaron por edades para que los más pequeños estuvieran delante. Ese fue el primer choque que tuve, en una misma aula puedes ver niños de distintas edades y cada aula tiene un grado distinto, por lo que la escuela brinda una educación básica y secundaria. Acto seguido se presentó un coro de voces que hizo cantar a algunos niños y bailar a muchos. Me encanto ver como uno de ellos se lanzó delante del coro y comenzó a bailar.
Can you see those kids behind the blinds? They are quite a sight, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Not long ago I was asked at my job if I could help as a photographer in an event created to help more than 200 children, they usually ask me for this kind of help for political things and my answer has always been no, but this time it was different.
The school we were going to is dedicated entirely to children who live in unstructured family environments, if it were not for this school these children would not know how to read and write. Normally children in Cuba attend schools close to where they live, this is not the case here, these children are picked up every morning regardless of the municipality they are from to attend classes. Otherwise, they would never go, the parents do not usually take care of them in almost any way and I will prefer not to tell the stories of some teachers with whom I could talk about how little the parents take care of them. This happens because they reject them because of some disability or simply because they are not interested in their care or education. Still, it is best not to look there because it exists in all societies of the world with its differences of course.
My answer to the question was yes, it could not be otherwise. I see it wrong to do something for them and post it on social networks, but I thought I would use the opportunity they offered me to learn more about this type of school. It is not usually known in society and surely something could be done to help. The whole time I was at the school I spent learning about the situation and thinking of ways to improve the situation. Also, the event would consist of activities where the kids would have fun, and that always helps to distract the mind from reality.
We took about 10 people from my work to the school along with several Cuban projects and businesses, and as soon as we arrived we started to organize everything. Before starting they spoke with the director of the center and the coordinator to finalize the details of everything, after that the teachers were bringing the students to the lobby of the school and were organized by age so that the youngest was in front. That was the first shock I had, in the same classroom you can see children of different ages and each classroom has a different grade, so the school provides a basic and secondary education. Then there was a choir of voices that made some of the children sing and many of them danced. I was delighted to see how one of them jumped in front of the choir and started dancing.
¿Se acuerdan de los niños de la primera imagen? Pues ellos fueron parte del espectáculo luego del coro, con distintas actuaciones. La primera fue una coreografía donde bailaron hasta cansarse, dando paso a otra con un estilo más marcado en lo que a la cubanía se refiere y para culminar, una bailarina española bailo al compás de un poema. Tras cada actuación los niños siempre animan y aplaudían, se veía que no era una algo que solía pasar al menos desde mi punto de vista.
Do you remember the children in the first picture? Well, they were part of the show after the choir, with different performances. The first one was a choreography where they danced until they got tired, giving way to another one with a more marked Cuban style, and to culminate, a Spanish dancer danced to the beat of a poem. After each performance the children always cheered and applauded, it was clear that this was not something that used to happen, at least from my point of view.
Al final de todas las actuaciones anunciaron un torneo de futbol en la escuela gracias a que uno de los proyectos que asistieron donaron algunos balones e incluso una copa del mundo a modo de trofeo para el equipo que gane. Nos hicimos una foto grupal, o más bien hice una foto grupal y nos fuimos todos para el área de recreo a estrenar los balones de futbol.
Una persona saco una guitarra y los niños se pusieron a cantar canciones. Otros jugaron voleyball, futbol y la manito (creo que hoy se le llama de otra forma a este juego, pero no recuerdo). Yo me la pase fotografiándolos y no fueron pocas las veces que se me acercaban preguntándome por la cámara. Para muchos era la primera vez que veían una y les enseñe un poco a usarla, lo básico de apuntar y disparar, pero era suficiente para sacarles una sonrisa cuando veían la foto. Otros solo quería verse en una foto o posar juntos.
At the end of all the performances, they announced a soccer tournament at the school thanks to the fact that one of the projects that attended donated some balls and even a world cup as a trophy for the winning team. We took a group photo, or rather I took a group photo and we all went to the playground to use the soccer balls for the first time.
One person pulled out a guitar and the kids started singing songs. Others played volleyball, soccer, and la manito (I think this game is called something else today, but I don't remember). I spent a lot of time taking pictures of them and many of them came up to me asking for the camera. For many of them, it was the first time they saw one and I taught them a little how to use it, the basics of pointing and shooting, but it was enough to make them smile when they saw the picture. Others just wanted to see themselves in a photo or pose together.
Ya casi al irnos repartieron unos caramelos y un poco de pan con pasta, que creo se podía mejorar y aquí es donde entran las ideas que me pasaban por la cabeza a cada rato. Pero no quiero decir ninguna sin antes hablar con la escuela y definir cuáles serían viable, al final estamos hablando de una escuela que depende de los fondos del gobierno y pueden ver mal que una comunidad quiera ayudarlos. A algunos esto quizás les suene raro, como van a ver mal que alguien nos ayude, pero si eres cubano me entenderás. Lo que tengo claro es que la comunidad cubana, como su nombre lo indica, es una comunidad y por ello debe contribuir de alguna forma a la sociedad. Ya ayudamos a los nuevos cubanos que caminan por Hive pero ayudar en aspectos fuera de Hive también es necesario. Proyectos como el de los pozos de agua en Ghana es un claro ejemplo.
Me gustaría saber la opinión de ustedes, tanto si creen que deberíamos buscar la manera de ayudar como cuales serían las distintas formas que podríamos hacerlo.
When we were almost leaving, they gave out some candy and some bread with pasta, which I think could be improved, and this is where the ideas that were going through my head all the time came in. But I don't want to say any of them without first talking to the school and defining which ones would be viable, after all, we are talking about a school that depends on government funds and they may see it as bad that a community wants to help them. To some people this may sound strange, how can they see it bad that someone helps us, but if you are Cuban you will understand me. What is clear to me is that the Cuban community, as its name indicates, is a community and therefore must contribute in some way to society. We already help the new Cubans that walk through Hive but helping in aspects outside of Hive is also necessary. Projects like the water wells in Ghana are a clear example.
I would like to know your opinion, both if you think we should look for ways to help and what would be the different ways we could do it.
