En la casa familiar, la de mis abuelos hay una piedra grande que no se parece a nada en los alrededores, por sus características luego de tantos años sé que se trata de un meteorito. Acá les dejo la historia contada por mi padre:

Corría el año 1957, mis padres que vivían en una pequeña casa al lado de mi abuelo, compraron una finca de 5 caballerías colindante a esta con orientación oeste a la anterior en la que yo había vivido desde mi nacimiento el 4 de Julio del año 1950.
Recuerdo que yo con 7 años de edad, me toco ir en lo último de la parte de atrás de una carreta de bueyes en la que se estaba haciendo la mudada. El tramo que recorrimos no pasaba el kilómetro, pero a mi me pareció una inmensidad por lo incomodo del lugar que me correspondió en la carreta.
It was the year 1957, my parents who lived in a small house next to my grandfather and bought a farm of 5 horse farm adjacent to this one facing west to the previous one in which I had lived since my birth on July 4, 1950. I remember that when I was 7 years old, I had to ride on the last of the back of an ox cart in which the moving was being done. The stretch we covered did not exceed a kilometer, but it seemed to me immensity because of the inconvenience of the place that corresponded to me in the cart.
Cuando llegamos, frente a mis ojos una casa de guano un poco alta forrada de tabla de algarrobo y piso de tierra; me llamo la atención el grueso y largo de las soleras y viguetas de madera de ateje y guásima (debieron ser de un monte virgen por sus dimensiones), así como tranques entre los horcones de jiquí y otras maderas duras no conocidas por mi.
Al segundo día de mi estancia en la nueva morada, cayó un tremendo aguacero que inundó toda el área y el próximo día como muchacho campestre al fin, salí a chapaletear un poco entre charcos y fango.
When we arrived, in front of my eyes a little high guano house lined with carob board and dirt floor; I was struck by the thickness and length of the wooden screeds and joists of ateje and guásima (they must have been from a virgin mountain due to their dimensions), as well as barriers between the jiquí forks and other hardwoods not known to me.
On the second day of my stay in the new abode, a tremendous downpour fell that flooded the entire area, and the next day as a country boy, at last, I went out to splash around a little among puddles and mud.
En mi primera excursión por los alrededores, me encontré al fondo de la casa, mas o menos a 50 metros de esta, una poceta riquísima para bañarse a escondida de mi mamá, pues a esta no le gustaba que yo me bañara en lugares de este tipo con aguas medias sucias y enfangadas. La charca tenia mas o menos unos 60 cm. de profundidad pues me daba por la cintura, y además descubrí algo muy significativo, en la parte sur de la poceta al final de esta, una piedra extraña de unos 1 a 1.2 metros de altura.
On my first excursion around the surroundings, I found at the back of the house, about 50 meters from it, a very rich pool to bathe secretly from my mom, because she did not like that I bathe in places of this type of dirty and muddy middle waters. The pond was more or less about 60 cm deep because it hit me by the waist, and I also discovered something very significant, in the southern part of the pocket at the end of it, a strange stone about 1 to 1.2 meters high.
La piedra visualizada era muy porosa de color amarillo rojizo, ferrugienta y estaba rajada en varias partes pero mantenía su figura redondeada. Las rajaduras se apreciaban eran motivo de la acción del tiempo por la influencia del sol y la lluvia. Yo me bañaba en aquella poceta mientras tenía agua el pequeño lagunazo de unos 30 metros de diámetros, y al terminar el baño me ponía los zapatos y me subía encima de la piedra para que el sol me secara y mi mama no me descubriera. Tenía que ponerme los zapatos pues los poros eran grandecitos, más o menos de 1 a 2 cm. y me pinchaban los pies.
The stone visualized was very porous reddish yellow, ferruginous, and was cracked in several parts but kept its rounded figure. The cracks could be seen were the reason for the action of the weather due to the influence of the sun and rain. I used to bathe in that pool while the small lagoon of about 30 meters in diameter had water, and when the bath was over I put on my shoes and climbed on top of the stone so that the sun would dry me out and my mom wouldn't discover me. I had to put on my shoes because the pores were big, about 1 to 2 cm. and they pricked my feet.
El próximo año, después de haber desbrozado montes y sembrados cítricos, viandas y pastos para el ganado, mi papa decide sustituir una canoa hecha de una ceiba barrigona pero que estaba medio podrida en uno de sus extremos, por una hecha de ladrillo y cemento. Mi mama logro convencerlo de aprovechar la ocasión para echar el piso al cuarto de ellos, la sala y el portal, dejando el piso de tierra al resto de la casa, (el cuarto de nosotros y la cocina comedor).
En los próximos meses se realizan dos viajes de camión con la arena, el cemento y los ladrillos para ambas obras, y se localiza un albañil conocido como Chebo el pelú para que realizara el trabajo.
Next year, after having cleared the mountains and planted citrus fruits, food and pastures for livestock, my dad decides to replace a canoe made of a pot-bellied ceiba tree that was half rotten at one end, with one made of brick and cement. My mom managed to convince him to take advantage of the opportunity to take the floor to their room, the living room, and the portal, leaving the dirt floor to the rest of the house, (the room of us and the dining kitchen).
In the coming months, two truck trips are made with the sand, cement, and bricks for both works, and a mason known as Chebo el pelú is located to carry out the work.
A la llegada del albañil en los días siguientes y este revisar los trabajos a realizar se percato que no existía piedra para la zapata de la casa y el relleno que de este material llevaba el fondo de la canoa ya que esta tendría una dimensión de 2 x 4 metros y debía ser eliminada la tierra vegetal y en su lugar rellenar con piedras antes de echar la arena con el cemento.
Al día siguiente salimos varias personas en la carreta de bueyes para la sabana que se encontraba detrás de la finca del español llamado Cuesta, a buscar piedras para las tareas antes descritas e indicadas por el albañil. Mientras se excavaba en el lugar donde se construiría la canoa y la zapata de la casa, llego otro albañil mandado a buscar por Chebo el pelú, para realizar las dos tareas simultáneamente, pues la canoa debía ser construida rápidamente pues se había eliminado la de la Ceiba y se había creado condiciones provisionales para el agua del ganado y por el otro lado la casa estaba llena de escombros y tierras. Se distribuyeron los materiales mas o menos calculados por los albañiles para cada objeto de obra, la piedra, la arena, el cemento y además se busco un poco de cascajo en una cascajera donde se había extraído para la línea del ferrocarril con vista a el relleno de la casa, todo se puso listo para el día siguiente acometer las dos obras.
Upon the arrival of the mason in the following days and this review of the work to be carried out he realized that there was no stone for the foot of the house and the filling of this material carried the bottom of the canoe since it would have a dimension of 2 x 4 meters and the topsoil had to be removed and instead filled with stones before pouring the sand with the cement.
The next day several people left in the ox cart for the savannah that was behind the farm of the Spaniard named Cuesta, to look for stones for the tasks described above and indicated by the mason. While digging in the place where the canoe and the foot of the house would be built, another mason arrived sent for by Chebo el pelú, to perform the two tasks simultaneously, because the canoe had to be built quickly because one of the Ceiba had been eliminated and provisional conditions had been created for the cattle water and on the other side the house was full of debris and earth. The materials more or less calculated by the masons were distributed for each object of work, the stone, the sand, the cement, and also some rubble was found in a rubble pit where it had been extracted for the railway line overlooking the filling of the house, everything was ready for the next day to undertake the two works.
La primera tarea a realizar por los dos albañiles fue la zapata y por desgracia para todos, en ninguna de las dos obras alcanzo las piedras por lo que mi papa indico recoger todos los pedruscos que pudieran aparecer en los alrededores, fue así que los albañiles descubrieron el pedrusco en el que yo me subía a secarme de mis baños ocultos, y como estaba cuarteado, les fue muy fácil con una mandarria hacer talco aquella piedra mas otras reunidas por nosotros para terminar los trabajos de este día. Los restos de aquella piedra fueron echados en la parte central más cercana al pozo, en el caso de la canoa y en la parte norte y final de la zapata del cuarto llegando incluso al cuarto de piso de tierra.
Para la edad (8 años) y los conocimientos que yo tenia en aquel momento, no podía ni imaginarme siquiera que aquella piedra que habían destruido se trataba de un meteorito.
The first task to be done by the two masons was the shoe and unfortunately for everyone, in neither of the two works did I reach the stones so my dad indicated to collect all the stones that might appear in the surroundings, it was so that the masons discovered the stone in which I climbed to dry myself from my hidden bathrooms, and as it was quartered, it was very easy for them with a mandarin to make talc that stone plus others gathered by us to finish the work of this day. The remains of that stone were thrown in the central part closest to the well, in the case of the canoe, and in the northern and final part of the foot of the room even reaching the fourth floor of the earth.
For the age (8 years old) and the knowledge that I had at that time, I could not even imagine that the stone that they had destroyed was a meteorite.
Hace pocos años, mas o menos por el 2016, viendo un programa de Reinaldo Taladrid en “Pasaje a lo desconocido” con nuestro astrónomo mayor, el Dr. Oscar Álvarez, fue que yo me di cuenta de la importancia que tenia aquel echo; según Oscar en Cuba no están registrado muchos hechos de caída de meteoritos y los que ocurrieron han sido de mas o menos 0.8 metros de diámetros y si mal no recuerdo esto fue en las provincias centrales.
Yo no puedo probar que el meteorito descrito tuviera 1.2 metros de diámetros aunque era de mi tamaño, niño de 8 años, pero si He descrito el lugar donde se encuentran sus restos y además el lugar donde cayo e incluso la dirección cósmica de donde vino.
En el lugar de su caída, en donde estaba la laguna donde yo me bañaba hace 65 años, queda una ondulación en el terreno y pequeños fragmentos del objeto cósmico. Aunque el entorno de la casa descrita ha cambiado y la propia vivienda ha sufrido algunos cambios, se mantiene en el mismo lugar geográfico y en la misma posición.
A few years ago, around 2016, watching a program by Reinaldo Taladrid in “Passage to the Unknown” with our senior astronomer, Dr. Oscar Álvarez, it was that I realized the importance of that echo; according to Oscar, there are not many meteorite fall events recorded in Cuba and those that occurred have been more or less 0.8 meters in diameter and if I remember correctly this was in the central provinces.
I cannot prove that the meteorite described was 1.2 meters in diameter although it was my size, an 8-year-old boy, I have described the place where its remains are located and also the place where it fell, and even the cosmic direction from where it came.
At the place of its fall, where there was the lagoon where I was bathing 65 years ago, there is a ripple on the ground and small fragments of the cosmic object. Although the environment of the described house has changed and the house itself has undergone some changes, it remains in the same geographical location and in the same position.
Seguidamente presentaré una foto en donde se señala el lugar de la caída del meteorito, el lugar donde estaba la canoa junto al pozo cuyos restos aun existen, y el lugar donde están los restos del meteorito en la zapata de la casa.

La finca comprada por mi padre se llamaba “La Lucha” y esta ubicada entre el central Senado (Noel Fernández), y Lugareño (Sierra de Cubitas). Estos centrales son ruinas actuales ya que fueron cerrados. La ubicación exacta de la finca es a 500 metros al norte de la parada “La Ofelia” de la línea del ferrocarril Camagüey – Nuevitas, perteneciente al municipio Minas de la provincia de Camagüey.
The farm bought by my father was called “La Lucha” and is located between the central Senado (Noel Fernández), and Lugareño (Sierra de Cubitas). These power plants are currently in ruins since they were closed. The exact location of the farm is 500 meters north of the “La Ofelia” stop of the Camagüey – Nuevitas railway line, belonging to the Minas municipality of the province of Camagüey.
