Disappeared on night flying exercise

P/O Graeme Mc Gregor killed
The first fatality in RNZAF Jet Aircraft History

Mc Gregor, aged 22 had joined the RNZAF in 1950, with 157 hrs solo and 18 hrs on Vampires,
had married in April, and was posted to 14 Sqn Ohakea,

On Tues 20 May 1952 he departed Ohakea at 2055 hrs with 55 min of fuel on board,
at 2125 hrs he reported to Air Traffic Control, Ohakea, that he was travelling from the
airfield towards the coast between Foxton and Wanganui.

When he had failed to return by 2155 hrs he was posted overdue and a search was commenced
with 2 Harvards dropping flares over the sea about 5 miles off the mouth of the Rangitikei River,
but nothing was sighted.

The search resumed at 0700 hrs the next day and 4 Harvards and 2 Oxfords completed a total of
13 sorties that day, many of the spotters were 14 Sqn ground crew.

Oil slicks were found 4 miles from the mouth of the Rangitikei River and at the mouth of the
Wanganui River, samples were taken for analysis.

On Sat 24 May a small piece of fabric covered spruce and 2 large pieces of a fuel tank were found
among the driftwood near the high tide mark on Te Horo Beach, 5 miles north of the Otaki River mouth.

The finder, Mr J W Townsend of Lower Hutt, did not report his findings until Sunday morning.

The items were quickly identified as Vampire parts, 7 further parts of the A/C were recovered
later in the day about a mile north of the Otaki river mouth by a search team from Ohakea.

The main wreckage and P/O Graeme Mc Gregor’s body have never been found.
