1947 : Centralia mine disaster in Illinois, one of the worst mining accidents in US history, takes place; explosion at the number 5 mine owned by Centralia Coal Company trapped and killed 111 miners
1951: US General Douglas MacArthur issues an ultimatum that threatens China, disrupting US President Harry S. Truman's attempts to reach a truce in the Korean War
1957 : France, West Germany, Italy, and the Benelux countries signed the Rome agreement, founded the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Economic Community (Joint Market); defines the documents that would become the EU, the two treaties came into force on 1 January 1958
1975: Khalid becomes king of Saudi Arabia after the killing of his half-brother King Faisal.
1986: Corazon Aquino, widow of opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino Jr., who was killed, gained de facto control over the Philippine government when Ferdinand E. Marcos escaped into exile.
