Canada Postage Stamps

3

In August of 1857 the Queen Victoria half penny imperforate stamp was issued. These stamps were originally purchased to pay for newspaper postage, when mailed out. This stamp was printed on wove paper in shades of rose and lilac rose. It was also rarely printed on horizontal or vertical wove ribbed paper.

Approximately 2,600,000 stamps were ordered. Some stamp catalogues value this stamp at $1,400 ($1,150 US) in very fine mint condition.

In June of 1857 the Queen Victoria 71/2 pence imperforate stamp was issued. Mail sent to the UK from Halifax, Canada by packet ships had a reduced rate of 6 pence sterling which was equal to 71/2 pence currency. Therefore this stamp was inscribed “Canada Packet Postage” and “Six Pence Sterling” in the oval frame of Queen Victoria’s portrait. In addition, the 6d stg. (6 pence sterling) and 71/2d cy (71/2 pence currency) was inscribed on the corners of this stamp.

The portrait of Queen Victoria on this stamp is similar to her portrait on the 12 pence stamp issued in 1851. This stamp was printed on wove paper in shades of green and dark green, and 100,000 were ordered. Some stamp catalogues value this stamp at $12,000 ($9,750 US) when in very fine condition.

In 1857 the HRH Prince Albert 6 pence imperforate stamp was issued. It was printed on very thick and soft fibrous wove paper in a reddish purple colour. Due to the soft nature of the paper, it is very difficult to find this stamp devoid of flaws, in used condition.

Some catalogues value this stamp at $40,000 ($32,500 US) in very fine mint condition and $9,000 ($7,300 US) in very fine used condition,
