"Why was hemp banned? "
During the enactment of the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act all cannabis was put under strict regulations for sale & cultivation. All cannabis was again targeted with the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 & listed as a 'Schedule 1' narcotic becoming effectively illegal to grow, produce, sell or even posses on a federal level within the Unite States. Even though the hemp species contains minimal psychoactive ingredient THC(Tetrahydrocannabinol) found in other cannabis plants, it was treated as a direct tie to the use of the plant to 'get high'.
"What is the difference between hemp and marijuana? "
Hemp and marijuana are both of the Cannabis or Cannabaceae plant species. Currently there are believed to be 3 main subspecies: Indica, Sativa and Ruderalis. Hemp (Cannabis Sativa), is considered to be the 'industrial' version of this strain as it is low in THC but it's high CBD content makes it more suitable for consumer product or construction material. The species used for the medicinal applications tend to have a higher THC to CBD ratio. Marijuana (slang for Cannabis Indica & Sativa) is the version cultivated almost in entirety for its high THC content. It is used for extracts, lotions, edibles, & suppositories for its psychoactive makeup. As the plant Cannabis is further researched even more will become known about it's varieties and possible applications to everyday life.
