The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 4, DTube Video #4

Welcome to my DTube Hebrew reading & language series.

The full study is now on line covering the Alef-Beyt here in my blog. This is a beginners program to teach letters, vowels, and reading. The vowels are marked in this bible and are designed to help avoid confusion on what a word is and how it is pronounced. The confusion is obvious in the hundreds of interpretations globally.

Today we are continuing in Genesis 4:9-12

Here we have another question from the all knowing, followed by the famous line, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" as if we could lie to Elohim.

God obviously knew exactly what happened because he could hear Abel's blood crying out from the ground. Blood is important. This was first blood, on the hands of a jealous brother.

The ground received the blood and as a result, Cain would no longer receive a harvest from the ground. He was cursed and would be a wanderer.

Blood was used for agreements such as the one forged at the foot of Sinai in the book of Exodus. If one party fails to keep their end of the bargain, they die a bloody death.

Blood was used as a covering after Israel failed to keep their end in the wilderness. blood of animals was necessary to remind them of the death penalty they owed until another way could be found to satisfy the contract.

Here is the English interpretation of today's reading to compare.

Try checking the two languages and seeing how the word order changes. In a lot of ways Hebrew is like Latin languages.

I only marked a couple things below. One, I am pointing out the use of hey marking the beginning of a question. I also differentiate between the word "you" and "now" which are spelled differently but are pronounced nearly the same.

Now is not the best interpretation but it works. Others: because you did that, as a result, this is why from now on, etc. You will see this word as we read on, sometimes translated and it came to pass.
