The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 23, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 23:10-13

The field of Machpelah is the topic in Genesis 23 and Abraham is asking to bury his wife there. Last week we heard his request and this week we see that Ephron, the owner of the field, was in the audience and would like to respond.

With all the sons of Chet there to hear, Ephron states "I give you the field and the cave that is in it."

This conversation is very clear and every word is prefaced by, "in the sight of the people" or "in the hearing of the people" - very important in those days so that nobody could claim that you stole what you have. Conviction of a crime needed witnesses back then, so people made sure to proclaim things in front of the people. Lots of people.

The story continues next week as Abraham responds...
