Eating 5 Little Meals per day is a Total Myth

ScatteredSnacks.jpgThis is just an anecdote, totally on the fly. But I always hear people say they strive to eat 5 little meals per day to boost their metabolism, or to lose weight or to stave off hunger. I never fully understood this logic that eating more often could lead to weight lose and a faster metabolism. Especially since the people I see trying this method are essentially stuffing their mouths constantly with granola bars, chips and diet sodas. Increased muscle mass, and improved cardiovascular endurance increase baseline metabolism, not how often you stuff your face.

Part of the reason this doesn't work is because most snacks, if not all "snacks," are prepackaged by a company that has to market their product to you. And the biggest success factor in a snack being bought again is sugar content. Sugar is addictive like cocaine and people want their food to have sugar in it to "taste" good. So when you eat sugar (glucose) your body releases insulin into the blood and insulin inhibits your body from metabolizing stored fat. Even diet soda which has no sugar, still shows that insulin is released in response to the ingestion of the false sugar. So how can your metabolism get boosted and lead to weight loss if you are constantly eating snacks that lock up your stored fat?

If you want to boost your metabolism you need to consistently work out, and eat less. If you need to snack eat fruit. And slowly come to the realization that real food does not come in boxes. Eat real food and you will be healthy, feel healthy and lose weight.
