American Cancer Society Has These Statistics:
Between 2012 - 2030, worldwide cancer cases are projected to increase by 50% (From 14million to 21million).
Approximately 39.6% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.
The number of people living beyond a cancer diagnosis reached nearly 14.5 million in 2014 and is expected to rise to almost 19 million by 2024.
In 2014, an estimated 15,780 children and adolescents ages 0 to19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,960 died of the disease.
The number of new cancer cases will rise to 22 million within the next two decades.
More than 60% of the world’s new cancer cases occur in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America; 70% of the world’s cancer deaths also occur in these regions.
This is lesson one, of a series of lessons that will be based on the disease called "CANCER". This write up is on the basics of cancer while subsequently, I will move in deeper to other aspects, like stages if cancer, how cancer spreads, symptoms, etcetera. Lately, around the globe. There has been an intense panic on the issue of cancer, looking at how bad this deadly disease has brought a lot of pain on families, individuals, organizations, just like the case of apple's Steve Jobbs. I have decided to enlighten my fellow steemians on the subject matter CANCER.
The Basics
The human body when broken to its smallest unit, will result in a cell " a cell is the smallest unit of life. Our bodies contains billions of these cells. Cells are so powerful, that a single cell is more powerful than a computer that can travel a rocket down to the moon and back. What on earth is cancer?
Cancer is a general name given to a collection of related diseases. There is a common factor in all kind of cancers. A term given to a case where some of the body cells begin to divide in an uncontrolled manner without stopping, and spreads to sorounding tissues, which then results in some growth called "Tumor" with the exception of leukemia cases, where there is an issue in normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream. Like it is popularly said, "cancer begins with a cell" So its important that you go for regular checkups to know your health status.
Cancers are divided into 5main groups
These are grouped according to the type of cell they begin to form.
Sarcoma - Cancer that begins in suppotive tissues, such as bone, fat, cartilage, muscle.
Carcinoma - This is the kind of cancer that begins in the tissues that cover internal organs.
leukemia - This is a very popular name. Starts in blood forming tissues like the bone marrows, and ends up causing the production of abnormal blood cells.
lymphoma - This is the kind of cancer that begins in the cells of the immune system
Brain and spinal chord cancers - Also known as central nervous system cancers.
Note - Cancers can also be classified according to the part if the body it starts. Eg breast cancer, lung cancer.
