Ausgabe meiner Serie "Gridcoin & Projects" in der ich erläutere, welche spannenden wissenschaftlichen Projekte man unterstützen kann in dem man seinen Computer Daten für die Wissenschaft berechnen lässt. Heute stelle ich eines der größten Sammelprojekte vor, das World Community Grid.

this is the 4th episode in my series "Gridcoin & Projects" in which i explain a little about the stunning projects that you can help by donating your computer power while it is idle. You even get a compensation in form of a cryptocurrency called Gridcoin, this is mining made meaningful.
Today iam going to put the spotlight on one of the biggest umbrella projects, the World Community Grid.

Simulation von Daten für die Wissenschaft

Wolltest du schon immer an der aktuellen Forschung teilnehmen ? Möglicherweise bahnbrechende Forschungsergebnisse mitverantworten ? Die Möglichkeit hierzu existiert bereits. Durch die Installation und das Ausführen von BOINC, einer Software der Berkeley Universität, ist es möglich Datenpakete für Forschungseinrichtungen zu berechnen und so aktiver Teil der Wissenschaft zu werden.
Darüberhinaus kannst du damit noch die Kryptowährung Gridcoin verdienen, deren Market Cap immoment bei 13 Millionen Dollar liegt und die ein tägliches Handelsvolumen von mehr als 30.000 Dollar aufweist (Daten von 22.10.17).

Data crunching for science

With the installation and execution of BOINC, a program by the University of Berkeley, you and your home PC or Laptop can take part in data crunching for scientific institutions and become an active part of the scientific society.
On top of that you can get rewarded for this with a cryptocurrency called Gridcoin. Gridcoin has a market cap of 13 Million Dollars and a daily trade volume of over 30,000 Dollar (Data from 10/22/17.)

World Community Grid

Das World Community Grid ist eines der größten Sammelprojekte innerhalb des BOINC Netzwerks. Ein Sammelprojekt dient als Anker für viele kleinere Projekte und bietet eine einfachere Möglichkeit sich in das Netzwerk einbringen zu können.
Das World Community Grid wird von insgesamt 446 Firmen, Universitäten und anderen Einrichtungen unterstützt, darunter unter anderem auch IBM, die Ripple Labs und Sony.
Gegenwärtig bieten 8 Projekte innerhalb des WCGs Datenpakete zum Berechnen an. Als Beispiel greife ich zwei sehr interessante Projekte heraus, zum einen "Smash Childhood Cancer" und als zweites "FightAIDS@home".
Smash Childhood Cancer
Dieses Projekt ist eine Erweiterung eines bereits erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Projekts. In 2014, nach Beendigung des Projekts "Help Fight Childhood Cancer", wurden mehrere mögliche Behandlungsmethoden für Neuroblastoma vorgestellt. Die selben Wissenschaftler haben ihr Team und den Fokus der Forschung erweitert um weitere Behandlungsmethoden für zusätzliche Arten von Krebs im Kindesalter zu erforschen.
Die Wissenschaftler haben Proteine und andere Moleküle entdeckt, die Schlüsselrollen in bestimmten Arten dieser Krankheit spielen. Die Aufgabe ist es jetzt, chemische Substanzen zu finden, die genau diese Schlüsselmoleküle zum Ziel haben und so den Krebs kontrollieren können.
Um Kandidaten unter den Abermillionen Möglichkeiten finden zu können wird eine enorme Rechenleistung benötigt, bereitgestellt von tausenden Freiwilligen über das Projekt World Community Grid.
FightAIDS@home
Der Kampf gegen AIDS ist lange nicht vorbei, auch wenn es etwas ruhiger um die Krankheit geworden ist. Dieses Projekt hat sich bereits seit 2005 diesem Kampf verschrieben. Hauptsächlich soll eine Methode gefunden werden, die die HIV-1 Protease stoppt und so einen wichtigen Schritt innerhalb des Lebenszyklus von HIV unterbricht.
Die Rechenleistung innerhalb dieses Projektes wird für die Simulation des Bindungsprozesses von Liganden an die HIV-1 Protease benötigt. Wenn es gelingt die Funktion als Enzym zu hemmen dann wäre es möglich die Ausbreitung von HIV zu stoppen und so die Entwicklung zu AIDS zu unterbrechen.

Wissenschaft am Rande des Erforschten mit dem Schwerpunkt Menschen zu Helfen. Das ist das World Community Grid.

World Community Grid

The World Community Grid is one of the biggest umbrella projects within the BOINC network. An umbrella project is a kind of anchor for many smaller projects and serves as an easy way to be featured on the network.
WCG is supported by 446 companies, universities, NGOs and government institutions, among them IBM, Ripple labs and Sony.
Currently, WCG features 8 different projects, I am going to pick 2 of them to explain a little more. One is "Smash Childhood Cancer" and the other "FightAIDS@home".
Smash Childhood Cancer
This project is a reboot of an already successfully finished project. In 2014, after finishing the project "Help Fight Childhood Cancer", some drugs have been found for neuroblastoma. The same scientists have extended their team and focus and are now searching for new drugs for additional types of childhood cancer.
The scientists have identified proteins and other molecules that play key roles in certain childhood cancers. The task is now to find chemical drugs that are targetting these key molecules and therefore are able to control cancer.
To find candidates among the millions of possibilities the project needs enormous computational power, dedicated from researchers all over the world through WCG.
FightAIDS@home
The fight against AIDS is long from being over, even though it has gotten a bit quiet around this topic. This project has taken up this fight in the year 2005 and did not stop ever since. It centers around the task to find a method of stopping HIV-1 protease and therefore dealing a blow to the whole lifecycle of the HIV Virus.
The computational power that is needed within that project is mostly used for simulating the attachment process of ligands to the HIV-1 protease. In case of success it could help to stop HIV to function as an enzyme, which ultimately would stop the spreading within the body and therefore preventing the development into AIDS.

Cutting-edge science, aimed at helping people, this is the World Community Grid.

Status des Projekts

Die Projekte innerhalb des WCG haben einen sehr unterschiedlichen Status.Hier sind alle 21 bereits abgeschlossenen Projekte aufgelistet.
Wie Eingangs bereits erwähnt laufen immoment 8 Projekte, mit einem Fortschrittsgrad zwischen 1% und 85%, diese sind hier zu finden.
