Some people already have an account on Golos without having to sign up. This is because they (among other criteria) had an active account on STEEM back in September. Certain accounts were copied over to Golos.

Another way to check if you already have a Golos account, go to these pages and do a text search for your account:
If you see your account, you'll need to use your steemit.com password from September or October. If you changed it in STEEM since then, the password on Golos did not change.

Does it matter if your account is the same on STEEM as it is on Golos? No. If your account was not automatically created, you don't have to create one with the same name. Other than consistency, there's no reason you need to keep the same name. They're not linked internally.
