A couple of friends participate with projects in the recent gitcoin grant.
I like to support them. But the process annoys the shit(coins) out of me.
First you need to create a Gitcoin Passport. And to "match" your donation (which means an algorithm adds funds to your donation, which can be quite significant) you need to have some reputation on the gitcoin passport. Which requires you to give up a lot of personal data like linking government IDs or social media accounts to it (I certainly won't do that).
There are options also to reach the minimum of 15 that do not require giving up your identity, but need staking or having shitcoins (GTC or ETH). Not very high amounts like a few Gitcoins and buy an .eth domain NFT, but aquiring them would burn more gas than the donation is worth (I had in mind to give $25 for two projects each).
Then you need shitcoins to actually make the donation in. ETH mostly or Polygon.
Then you need to "bridge" your shitcoins to an L2 ETH shitcoin called Optimism.
Finally you can checkout (back your fav. projects).
So this is what I spent:
1 hour to understand the whole gitcoin grants concept
1/2 hour to swap precious Satoshis to ETH shitcoins
1 hour to understand how to actually donate
The swap of ETH to Optimism ETH would have cost more than one of the planned donations at current gas fees. That was the moment when I dropped my intent to use Gitcoin to donate.
